John Mellencamp and Wife of 18 Years Split Up

John Mellencamp and his model wife are taking some of the sheen off all the recent celebrity engagements by delivering some sad news. The 'Pink Houses' rocker, 59, and Elaine Irwin Mellencamp, 41, announced through a spokesman on Thursday that they are "calling it a day as a couple" after 18 years of marriage and 20 years together.

"John and Elaine Mellencamp are proud of their 20 years together and are very happy with their accomplishments both as parents and as a family," the statement reads.

The couple will continue to raise their two children, sons Hud and Speck, in his home state of Indiana.

No reason was given for the split and it's unclear if they have filed for divorce. This is Mellencamp's third marriage.

The pair met on a photo shoot when Elaine, a bonafide supermodel at the time, was hired to appear on the cover of his 1991 album, 'Whenever We Wanted.' They were engaged 10 weeks later and married the next year. The cover of that album:

I remember when john cougar took a beer bottle to the head at a who concert in phoenix in 1982.I think that was when he became a lib after all his marbles were busted loose.

He's a heavy smoker who wouldn't stop even though he's had cancer scares, that's one of the reasons he's aging so badly. He doesn't' take care of his health at all and like Valerie Bertinelli with Eddies drug and drinking couldn't take being their mommies anymore worrying when they'll drop dead. She deserves better, no matter how much you love someone it doesn't mean they're going to change. I know!!!!

I actually really like the guy, but it is true he hasn't aged well. He looks like a boozer, he's got that puffy booze face. Although most of us would probably look like crap next to a super model, so whatever. Sad about their marriage, they have been together a long time.

He is damn near 60!!!! I dont think he looks so bad really. He had a heart attack years ago and smoked like a chimney. He may still for all I know,but I dont think he looks that bad for a man his age.
