It was only a week ago when America fell in love overnight with a homeless man with a "golden voice" on the streets of Columbus, Ohio. It was less than a week ago when we all watched Ted Williams life miraculously turn around after reuniting with his mother and finding work -- high profile work with Kraft and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Unfortunately for Williams, 53, old habits always die hard. According to a confirmed report by Gossip Cop, Dr. Phil convinced Williams to go to rehab after he got into a fiery exchange with his daughter Janey on Monday.
Gossip Cop spoke with a representative for Dr. Phil, whom Williams taped two segments with over the weekend. On the program, Williams admits to still drinking; his daughter accused him of sticking to the bottle on Monday.
While shooting the two segments, Williams and his family were reportedly kept separate in two hotels. The first episode was an introduction to Dr. Phil and the second episode, which aired on Wednesday, featured the family reunion.
In an interview with 'Entertainment Tonight,' Williams described a family gathering that devolved into a shouting match between him and daughter Janey.
"I wanted to bring it to a close by just saying 'shut the hell up and let me talk to your mother,'" Williams said. "When that was said out of my mouth, my daughter exploded ... fists started flying, none of which were mine, none of which were mine, but it could have escalated to the point where it could have gotten really ugly. So in the process of doing that, I got scratched on my face."
But Janey had a different story to tell, claiming the argument began because her estranged father, a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, had been drinking heavily since being plucked from obscurity.
"He has consumed at least a bottle of Grey Goose a night. That's not including the Coronas he ordered, that's not including the Budweisers he ordered, the other alcohol, the wines. He drinks heavily," she said.
Ted Williams denied he's been drinking, but admitted to CBS News on Friday that his sudden rise to fame has been a challenge. "I wanted a nerve pill yesterday, to be honest with you."
Life coach and radio host Mel Robbins tells PopEater that Williams' feel-good story was doomed from the moment it became clear the media was going to latch onto him and not let go.
"The media created a reality show right in front of our eyes," she says. "Ted Williams may have a golden voice, but he's also got a rap sheet, a drug addiction, nine children he abandoned and a mother he has been estranged from for 20 years. Does everyone deserve a second chance, sure. But don't kid yourself -- you can't overcome a lifetime of bad decisions and mental health issues with a few morning show appearances."
"If Ted is ever going to get better, he's got to be honest with himself and admit he's addicted to drugs and alcohol," Dr. Phil said. "I've told him it's not going to be easy and it's going to take a lot of hard work. It might be a long journey for him, but this is a big step in the right direction."
I really would like to see a happy ending with this story. This man is never going to be perfect and he's going to have to take responsibility for getting sober. But, I would really like to see him do well.
This gentlemen never had a chance. The media set him up to fail to eat him alive. If someone could collage those bizarre, maudlin reports from the morning TV and evening news about this poor guy, you can see how he was just eaten alive by the monster of the media. You cannot take an addict and hand him money and fame over night, they did not care, he was the story of the minute and they didn't care what happened to him. This is the American media, its ugly and trashy and mean spirited.
I cannot imagine the enormous pressure he has suddenly found himself under. How many of us ease our fears with a beer, or a donut, or a smoke? It would be much more surprizing if he did NOT turn to those things at this point, since he's been relying on those substances for so long. Good that he's getting the help he needs first, and then the opportunities will be much easier to face. I wish him all the best.
The media set this poor man up for this. They love a tragedy or a disaster. Dr. So and So is just part of the publicity merry go round. You watch, 6 months from now none of these so called good people will have anything to do with this man since the popularity will have worn off.
PUH_LEEEZE. This guy makes me sick. Period. This is why my children have such a hard time believing that hard work and diligence pays off. He was found curbside, which is exactly where he left those NINE children. Drop that idiot loser back off right where you found him.
Rick, your kids believe that because they have you as a father. Be careful of your negative views towards others, as you just might produce negativity in your children
Some of these readers are thinking that this new found "pressure" led him back to the bottle, and possibly drugs as well.
I believe that good old "Ted Williams" has never been off of drugs or alcohol and is using this new found fame to blame for the pressures.
In most of the previous interviews, he states that his love of "God" has kept him clean and he has the will power to follow the Bible. Clearly, his own mother even told him on National TV that she doubts he has been sober and will stay that way.
He has a gifted voice, but he also has gift in how to con people, as he has been doing with the American public.
I hope that Kraft foods, has it in their contract with him, that he stay sober and stay out of trouble.
Unfortunately, this guy is a "professional con artist" and would be actor, whose curtain call is almost up.
I couldn't agree more. If Ted did not get "discovered" he would still be on the streets of Ohio drinking & drugging. I aslo agree that he is/was not clean & sober & all addicts are con men. They say exactly what you want to hear. I wish him the best but I don't really think he is sincere about rehab.
That poor man and his family. They should have left him where they found him. He seemed a whole lot happier. He didn't ask for any of this and frankly, it's just making things worse. Ya'll need to find another golden goose to play with. Sad and sorry.
Give Ted a break. There are so many people out there who got hooked on drugs and once they were at the bottom of the barrel, couldn't FIND a way out, even though they wanted to. He is so fortunate that the journalist saw the talent in Ted, spread the word, and was able to help Ted bring himself out of the black hole he was in. Drug addicts being around drug addicts isn't the way out...Ted needs to take advantage of the rehab and support of so many people to keep him on the right track. Good for you Ted. I'm rooting for you.
This was/is a great story. I was watching Dr.Phil today and I really don't think Mr. William's has had that "aha" moment yet, meaning I don't think he fully understands what a blessing this whole thing is yet. Going from a person who has no money to the position he's in right now is truly a blessing. In order for him to truly make it, he's gonna have to enlist some outside help(rehab) to stay off the streets and away from the bottle.
Maybe Ted needs to stay away from his family! After seeing him on the TODAY show with his mother ... I'm thinking the lack of support from family plays a huge part in his dependency on alcohol and drugs.
I would also check the family history; sometimes there is a predisposition to alcohol/drug abuse.

This fool just needs a bodyguard to be with him 24/7 to keep him on the straight and narrow. Rehab success stories are few and far between.

Raise your hand if you believe he's never been off drugs or alcohol!!! (raising hand)

Hopefully rehabilitation and therapy will help Ted Williams break his addictions and in tiime give him and his family some measure of healing.
At least Mr. Williams has the prescence of thought to realize that he needs help and to accept same.

..well, that was short lived fame. It was probably all too much for him...

I said before and I'll say it again, too much media attention, too much pressure, they should have let him work it out more privately.
