Did Golden Globes Censor Ricky Gervais' Joke About Mel Gibson?

Sitting down for an interview with Conan O'Brien this week, British funnyman Ricky Gervais claimed the producers of Sunday's Golden Globes broadcast gave one -- but only one -- of his comedy ideas a big thumbs-down.

Not that 'Conan' fans could be entirely certain whether Gervais was being serious. Enjoying himself on O'Brien's show, was the master of painfully awkward humor having a laugh at the very idea of shocking millions? (Or did he really think a Hitler costume was a good idea?)

According to Gervais, he's been given fairly free rein to write any wisecracks he wants, as he preps for a return gig hosting the Golden Globes this weekend. As always, the Globes will celebrate stars in both movies and TV shows, and the ceremony (during which celebs sit at tables near a free-flowing bar) is famous for its anything-goes vibe. So the emcee certainly has a big, lively crowd of Hollywood VIPs to have fun with...and make fun of!

But this year, we apparently won't be treated to his opening gag about Mel Gibson's anti-Semitism. Have a look as Gervais describes what he had in mind as a kick-off for Sunday's show:

Whocares. This guy should go back o England where he can seat and enjoy his millions from the payments from the "Office."

i couldn't believe they asked gervais to host the golden globes, the first time, let alone, asking him to host the show, again. not funny at all, this guy has made millions, by bashing and humiliating people. i never heard him bash an englishman. i wonder, is this guy, even an american citizen. does he have the legal paperwork?

Huh? Your definition of "bashing" differs from mine. (And, I suspect, that of most people.)

Regardless, Mr. Gervais most certainly mocks his fellow Brits, quite regularly.

And with that punctuation (or lack thereof), I would ask: are *you* an American citizen?

Through the years Ricky has always been the good guy. Theres not been one bad word about him, except today, on here.
One Ricky is worth millions of Mel's.
Mel is filled with hatred for anyone who does not have the same religion, and skin color as Mel. Mel shows his true self when hes drunk, or sober. He is a miserable man, that hates the world.
Ricky is a funny man, he has never trashed anyone like Mel has done, many times.
I cant understand why people are so pro Mel, when Mel would simply tell them to drop dead, if their not the same race as him.

Your so right-on YellowRose. However if you check out Gibson's bio., his father is steeped in this volatile-laced, bigotry and racist ideology that Mel inherited and to this day are demons he can't shake off. This should not be an excuse for his outrageous outbursts and these little tweaks now and then are reminders to stifle his rage and learn to treat all people with respect .

I do not find Ricky funny, I do however find him extremely offensive. If this is british humor he needs to go back to England. Don't know why he was asked to return but then Hollywood is Hollyweird

ricky gervais may have indeed been funny and a great host of the golden globes last year but this year he was a flop - not funny, just plain insulting
