Oh Ricky, You Weren't Fine: Gervais Banned From Globes Hosting Duties?
Ricky Gervais trashed Angelina Jolie, Charlie Sheen, Hugh Hefner, Mel Gibson, God, Tom Cruise (and the list goes on) last night when he
hosted the Golden Globes. But the joke that got him in the most trouble was when he made fun of Philip Berk, the current head of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA for short).
"Ricky will not be invited back to host the show next year, for sure," a member of the HFPA tells me, adding that Gervais' relentlessly mean shtick could have even larger consequences. "For sure any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated. He humiliated the organization last night and went too far with several celebrities whose representatives have already called to complain."
Berk verified on Monday that Ricky has ticked off the HFPA, telling the
Hollywood Reporter that the two-time host went too far with his jokes aimed at other celebs.
"He definitely crossed the line," Berk said. "And some of the things were totally unacceptable. But that's Ricky. Any of the references to individuals is certainly not something the Hollywood Foreign Press condones."
This opening monologue at Sunday's ceremony set the tone with Gervais announcing, "It's going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking -- or as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast."
Next the British comedian went after Angelina who was sitting at table one and not laughing when he said, "It seems like everything this year was 3-dimensional -- except for the characters in The Tourist," Gervais said. "I haven't even seen 'The Tourist' -- who has?"
However, the remark that upset the most attendees was when he described Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor's performances in 'I Love You, Phillip Morris' as "two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay. So, the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists, then." The not-so-subtle dig at Tom Cruise and John Travolta (we can presume) was met with boos and groans.
Humble Pie was soon served up by Cruise's 'Tropic Thunder' co-star, Robert Downey Jr., after Gervais made fun of him for his long-conquered troubles with the law and drug addiction.
"Aside from the fact that it's been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I'd say the vibe of the show's pretty good so far, wouldn't you?" Downey Jr. asked.
After that, Gervais knew he had lost the crowd, and his few remaining appearances on stage were met with stifled laughs and stern faces. A popular Twitter phrase during this part of the show: "Where's Ricky Gervais?"
Ricky explained his nearly hour-long absence in comments to BBC News a day after the show. "I was allowed to choose who I would introduce in advance. I obviously chose presenters who I had the best jokes for, and who I knew had a good sense of humor."
He added, "Everyone took it well and the atmosphere backstage and at the after show was great."
To make matters worse, though, Gervais' last words in the telecast were, "Thank God for making me an atheist." Smooth move!
"Ricky blew it big time. It's one thing to make fun of celebrities but it's another to make them totally uncomfortable," an insider tells me. "People in that room were furious but had to sit and smile because the camera's were on them. It really says something when several people who attended said they would have felt safer with Kathy Griffin hosting."
Ricky, if you're going to be naughty, don't forget to also be NICE!

Agree! :-))
Mr. Pop Eater:
How is his schtick any different from anything Howard Stern (someone you seem to adore)does on a daily basis? These celebrities need to get a thicker skin. They are so used to being coddled and propped up they lack the ability to laugh at themselves.

Howard Stern is a radio show host. Hosting the Golden Globes is a whole different venue. It was not "roast the celebrities" night. I think Ricky was just mean and his jokes were not funny. The Hugh Hefner part was disgusting. And I think Johnny Depp and Angie should have just walked on stage and slapped Ricky. He was a jerk.
I think the main difference here would be on the radio, the target isn't being surveyed for a response. The cameras were training on certain individuals for their reactions. It's known the room is small for the Golden Globes so there's no doubt you will find someone nearby with an expression for a camera. The sad part is, it's supposed to be the launch of a season of awards. A celebration of art if you will. Loose cannons like Gervais cheapen the name of the Golden Globes.
Cheapen the Golden Globes...Pia Zadora won one remember?
This was an awards ceremony, NOT a roast. He did it in the wrong place. Plus, he stunk !
Ricky is the only reason I watched the golden globes! He made it thoroughly entertaining! He said what we were all thinking anyway. I mean... have you people seen the "Tourist". Nominated for awards..... REALLY?!!
Redhotamles
You agree with closing the Nambian boarders for baby trasaction, that is Jolie and Pitt. Your obscence and need to be slapped. I am sure Nambian people and Muslim Rape Women and some people in Hollywood agree to. Without names...you guess...think think think
Good Luck
Ricky G. crossed the line and because of this l turned the show off!

You did what you're supposed to do when you don't like something-- Hit the remote..
Next year they'll ask you who to put in as MC...
They deserved every bit they got. It was time that these so called actor and actresses, I mean Jolie, Cruise, Travolta, Willis, two of them try to convert America to Scientology, one a serios cheat and Willis. All the people he mentioned deserved it, to be made fun off. If you don't understand, switch your channel. Most of us liked it.
Your loss.
Ricky was the ONLY thing worth watching. The nominations were a joke. I've never seen so many "are we done yet" looks whenever the camera panned the audience.
Why did you turn it on in the first place??????????????? Didn't you want to see the winners or did you just put it on to see the host??????????????????????????????? Give me a break!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah, and nobody missed you..............
NOBODY "adores" Howard Stern !! On a list of ten people the world would be better off without, he's tied for 6th (with Charles Manson).
if you turned the show off then you have no business saying anything, shut up!
celeb talking, not cool
So, hollywood can dish it out, but they can't take it. Ricky was a riot and didn't say anything that wasn't true!! Angelina is a bad actress, but so many people can't get past looking at her breasts to see that. Charlie Sheen is a drunk, etc, etc. So what did he say, in humor, that was so awful?? Personally, I'm tired of Hollywood patting itself on the back with awards show after awards show for a job DONE. It's the hosts that make it worth watching and he was GREAT!

I thought Mr. Gervais was very funny and the actors need to get over themselves. I love the American show "The Office", it is almost as funny as the English version and I was so disappointed that Steve C. couldn't laugh at himself and I think the whole show would have been better if the actors had at least pretended to be able to laugh at themselves. After all, they are actors, right? Go, Ricky! You were funny and entertaining!
