Anne Hathaway Cast as Catwoman in 'Dark Knight Rises'

Catwoman is returning to the big screen, and Anne Hathaway is putting on the claws. Christopher Nolan announced in a statement Tuesday that Hathaway will join Tom Hardy and Christian Bale in his latest 'Batman' film, 'The Dark Knight Rises,' according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story," Nolan said.

Hardy, who starred in Nolan's last film 'Inception,' will play Batman's nemesis Bane. News broke of Hardy's casting back in October.

"I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman's most formidable enemies," Nolan said.

Hathaway has long been on Nolan's shortlist of actresses, which included names like Jessica Biel and Keira Knightley, vying for a part in the forthcoming 'Batman' film. Actresses have been testing for the part opposite Bale for the last few weeks, the report says.

Catwoman was iconically portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer in Tim Burton's 1992 smash 'Batman Returns.' Halle Berry starred in a spinoff film not related to the 'Batman' franchise in 2004.

This is the second time Bane will be included in a 'Bat' film -- he was Poison Ivy's muscleman in 'Batman & Robin' in 1997.

Before Nolan's confirmation, rumors swirled that Hardy would play Dr. Hugo Strange.

'The Dark Knight Rises' will be released on July 20, 2012.

Hardy, who starred in Nolan's last film 'Inception,' will play Batman's nemesis Bane. BOOOOOO!!! Anne Hathaway is nowhere near sexy enough to be Catwoman. Jessica Alba or maybe even Amanda Seyfried would have been good as Catwoman, but I don't think Anne Hathaway is gonna pull it off. How depressing! Not looking forward to this film at all. What a let down!

That's the film industry for ya! It's all about casting who is popular and never about casting who is right for the part! Most actors now a days are models & it sucks bad! Really bad!!! There are no Jack Lemmons, no Al Pacinos, no Robert De Niros, no Meryl Streeps, no Gene Hackmans, no Jack Nickolsons, no Dustin Hoffmans, no Faye Dunaways, no Jane Fondas...And those are strong actors from back in the day! Do you see my point Mr. or Miss Casting Directors???? Talent to get into character but not model looking. Even though I don't really care for her I think Angelina Jolie would have been a better choice. I rest my case. Thank you.

I really like Anne Hatheway. Not sure she is the sexiest woman in Hollywood, however if she can pull off looking good in the Cat Woman suit great. She can definitely act and that's what matters. Someone to consider would be Kate Beckinsale...now she's smoking hot!!

Ann Hathaway is a good actress but I feel she doesn't have the physical appeal of Catwoman. Look at all the other actresses that have portrayed her? Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt, Lee Meriwether...They all had that sex appeal & extra VAVOOM that made the character work! I just don't see her as a sexy catwoman! She's more of a wholesome, neurotic Batgirl type if anything! lol

Excellent points Liz. Catwoman is supposed to be sultry and sexy neither of which Anne is. I could think of a dozen actress' that would be better suited.

Couldn't agree with you two more liz and Becks. Anne is what some would call an ugly duckling. Catwoman historically has been played by physically beautiful women who oozed sex appeal and this poor girl isn't either one of those things. She may be a very good actress and a nice lady, however sexy and beautiful she is not.

She wouldn't be my first choice but I didn't know what to make of the casting of Heath Ledger for The Joker, either. He blew it out of the water. Hopefully Anne will do the same.

For a franchise that makes alot of money .... Anne Hathaway was the sexiest person they could get? She is yet another reason I will wait for this on DVD - I wouldn't waste money to see this in a theater.
