Is MTV's 'Skins' Straddling Child Pornography Laws?

Although the British seem to do it better, we copy it just as well -- and in this case, a little too well. With the latest Brit TV series, 'Skins,' making it across the pond and landing on MTV, Americans are getting more than an eyeful of gratuitous teenage sexuality in all of its glory.
But American teens better TiVo the first two episodes before network execs force producers to tone down the heavy petting and nudity. The show has been labeled by some -- including
The New York Times -- as a flagrant display of child pornography.
Featuring scenes that simulate masturbation, sex and drug use, it sounds like just another day at the 'Jersey Shore.' But MTV's other scandal-saturated reality shows all feature actors/reality stars who are at least 18 years old. 'Skins' boasts a bevy of fresh-faced actors, some as young as 15.

The third episode, set to debut on Jan. 31, follows Chris, played by Jesse Carere, who, after experimenting with erectile dysfunction pills, runs down the street naked, exposing his 17-year-old bum. The episode spawned a vehement reaction from the Parents Television Council, who called the show the "most dangerous program that has ever been foisted on your children." Now it's set to be toned down before it airs.
'Skins' carries a rating of TV-MA (meant for those above 17 years old) and scored killer ratings with its premiere episode, but the Times cites analysts saying at least 1 million of the new 'Skins' enthusiast viewers were under 17.
With allegations of violating child pornography statutes, it seems as though the notoriously envelope-pushing network will not be able to keep up with the show's original plot lines (the premiere American episode was almost identical to its British original) that British audiences enjoyed. The U.K. is famously more accepting of televised eroticism.

well its a little young for me, but to make claims like this with all thats out there now. We can't stop kids from doing the wild thing but maybe we could do less to glorify what, teach lessons in waiting until they are mature enough to cope with relationships like that. But I feel its more the job of the parent to decide if their child should watch. as far as if it is child porn, i've not seen it, and just because its been implied I won't be.

People need to get a grip. Taylor Momsen was in Gossip Girl since she was 15...doing far more provocative things yet no one said a thing about child porn. Mila Kunis has been swapping spit with Ashton on That 70s Show since she was 14 yet no one got their panties in a bunch over that.
If you don't like your kids watching the show, tell them not to. Set up parental controls...whatever. Quit expecting everyone else to be your dumb kids' parents.

As the famous "Church Lady" once said on the air "If you don't like what you see; get the remote and change the channel!"

I don't intend on watching the show, but from what I've heard it's just another knockoff that wants to shock people - and it is. Pretty soon it will be using the Parents' Television Counsel's words on it's advertisements (Gossip Girl ring a bell?)
If the producers want to make a show like that, it's their business. It's the actual parents of 14 and 15 year olds that should monitor what their children are watching on TV. The show - regardless of whether or not the children already know of such acts, which we all know they do - is inappropriate.

What is the point of this show? To show super young teens in an OVERLY sexual way? FOR WHAT? ugh...MTV loves to GLORIFY teen sex (this would be the opposite of "sheltering"). Neither one is good.
Showing minors in ultra sexual situations is ridiculous and unnecessary anyway..the ones who actually want to see that (clueless teens and pedophiles) shouldn't anyway.
Parents should control the house...not the boob tube but MTV should def clean it up a bit.

i think they should bring back a re-vamp of my so-called life! that was a good show. this one looks a little boring to me. i don't wanna see 15 year olds making out and snorting lines on each other's stomachs.

Okay. I'm a 16 year old boy and I believe I'm pretty mature for my age. If I feel like I want to watch a show that is more towards what's happening now in my life, then I'm going to watch it. I'm a virgin, have never done drugs, and the only time I've had alcohol is a sip of a beer or wine with my parent's supervision. I feel like parents don't know what's going on in teenage life anymore. This stuff is how it is. But not all teenagers are stupid and don't know what's right from wrong. I feel like there's more teenagers who are mature than there are parents. It's not hurting anybody except the people who don't like the idea of they're children having sex even though most likely the child has done something of that nature or knows how to deal with that situation. Let the show run. If you're not mature enough to watch something that most of your children have probably seen before (i.e. genetalia) than don't, but let your kids make the decision to watch it (if they're old enough of course).

First off, tv shows are not being "foisted" upon our kids. YOU are the parent, you take control of what they watch and when. TV is NOT and should never be a baby sitter. Actually spend time with your kids and talk to them. This is the real world, this stuff is happening every day! If they don't see it on TV, then they sure as hell will see it at school. Don't treat your kid like a hermit. Take this opportunity to explain to them what is going on, teach them about sex and why they shouldn't have it or do drugs and such. Remind your kids that shows like this glorify sex, and show them the statistics on teen pregnancy and std's and drug use.

i agree
I agree with you, Americans never want to talk about sex and drugs and the effect it has on a person and i should im a 20 year old american. maybe thats why america is plagues with high levels of STD'S and high teen pregnancy rates. We choose to talke sex education out of schools, why? because kids will want to have sex, WILL GUESS WHAT KIDS WANT TO HAVE SEX REGARDLESS. SEX IS SOMETHING EVERYONE DOES NO MATTER WHAT, ITS NOT SIN. MAYBE PARENTS SHOULD TAKE ALL THAT ENERGY AND ACTUALLY TALKE TO THERE CHILDREN ABOUT SEX AND DRUGS AND USE THE SHOW AS A WAY TO TEACH THEM. AND PEOPLE THIS IS NOT THE ONLY SHOW WITH SEX AND DRUGS AND IT WILL NOT BE THE LAST. JUST BECAUSE THE SHOW SKINS DISAPPER, DOE SNOT MEAN TEENS WILL STOP HAVING SEX AND DRUGS.

You know I've talked to teens who watch this show. They don't feel pressured by it or that it's a bad influence cuz the truth is that this IS how real high is for most teens. Even tho I wasn't that bad in high school I knew ppl who were. My best friend was and STILL IS. That show portrays THE TRUTH! The adults who are getting their panties in a bunch over this ARE IN DENIAL! My own mother wants to block the whole MTV channel bcuz of this one show. If teens don't know about this, how can they be prepared? And trust me, speaking from experience not having your kids in public school doesn't help. I think it makes it worse. I got eaten alive when I went for the first time in 8th grade bcuz the stupid goody goody disney movies that high school is supposed to be like LIED! This IS the REAL WORLD PPL! This IS what's going on and maybe it's shows like this that will finally open ppl's eyes to the truth. You think cuz you're older you're protecting us? No, adults, parents, teachers, and any other "authority figure" YOU AREN'T. We know what really goes on and most teens feel like they can't trust any adult. So we deal with it on our own. In secret, living secret lives, just like the show Skins. My mom says that if that's really what it's like then that scares her. Well good, cuz while this show isn't pretty, it's showing the ugly truth and it should scare you.
