It was apparently Ryan Gosling's idea to play the ukulele in 'Blue Valentine.' The actor sings 'You Always Hurt the One You Love' to Michelle Williams' character at the beginning of the film. Gosling and Jimmy Kimmel performed a duet version on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live,' though it was obviously Kimmel's idea to hog the spotlight.

"You're the only one that gets the stool?" asked Gosling, standing next to the host. He answered, "We've just got the one stool."

Gosling began the song, then Kimmel chimed in, moving toward the camera and blocking view of Gosling. "You always take the sweetest rose and crush it," Kimmel sang (badly), with the spotlight only on him. See the video after the jump.
