Jason Mraz: I Won't Wed Until Gay Marriage Is Legal

Jason Mraz may be engaged to fellow singer Tristan Prettyman, but don't expect the couple to walk down the aisle until gay marriage is legal.

"We both feel that in our engagement, we have a union that's really special and can't be broken. It's a sacred bond," Mraz told Us Weekly. "The wedding would be nice for our family, our friends, our community -- our moms especially -- and so it puts us in the fight."

The singers plan to wait to get married until it's allowed for everyone.

"We can't get married until [gay] marriage is legal and equal," the 'I'm Yours' singer continued. "I think giving people the right to marry will be a huge movement in civil rights."

So until then, the couple is enjoying their newly-engaged status. Mraz, 33, proposed to Prettyman, 28, on Christmas Eve, and the engagement has changed the singer's outlook on life.

"I see the world through a different filter and I get more freedom," he said. "I'm not so concerned with the rest of the world anymore."

He continued, "The freedom now is that my work ethic changes, how I show up on a day to day basis changes, how I take care of myself has transformed. It's been really special."

And as for his thoughts on Prettyman, he sums it up in one short sentence: "She is definitely my dream girl."

I love these entertainment people that think what they do is so important that they can change the world. So what! Why even bother to get engaged if you don't intend to marry? Publicity maybe? Get over yourself.

I agree that it sounds like a convenient way to not actually get married/get publicity. While I applaud their desire for equal rights, I think the government doesn't give a damn whether heterosexual couples stop getting married, as long as the babies (Uncle Sam's future soldiers)keep rolling out. Sad but very true.

I have had numerous gay friends over the years. BUT I don't feel marriage should be redefined to include situations that it has never included before. I don't disrespect their relationships, I just don't feel that it should be called marriage. I also happen to think that the institution of marriage has been cheapened by how lightly straight couples jump into and out of it almost on whims. Not to mention how many people now think it's perfectly acceptable to have extramarital affairs.

I would have to argue that you have many gay friends. Being gay, I have no "friends" who see me as less deserving of the full and equal rights that they enjoy. You may have gay acquaintances, and you may even think they are your friends.. But if you do not believe they are 100% your equal, they are not. And believe me, they do not consider you to be a friend. They have too much self respect to have friends like you.

They already have the right to get married just as I do... as long as the marriage is between ONE MAN AND ONE WOMAN! They can marry whom they want - as long as the marriage is EQUAL and between ONE man and ONE WOMAN! Go have a civil union and make everyone happy...What? Not equal? It will NEVER be equal.
