Bret Michaels Doing Well Following Heart Surgery

Bret Michaels' heart has done a lot of lovin' in the rocker's 47 years, and now it's time for a little TLC.

Doctors found a hole in Michaels' heart last May while the Poison rocker was hospitalized following a mini-stroke. The surgery to repair the hole was performed on Monday at Phoenix's St. Joseph's Hospital, near Michaels' Scottsdale, Ariz., home.

Just last month, Michaels voiced his optimism about the procedure, the prepraration for which was already underway. "I'd say if everything goes well, I'll spend about three days in the hospital," he told PEOPLE. "And then about three weeks after that just really, really, really taking it easy."

A rep for the hospital called the newly engaged singer's procedure "successful," saying, "Michaels is currently recuperating at St. Joseph's where he remains for observation in ICU."

While Michaels' lengthy medical history, including a 40-year struggle with Type 1 diabetes, an emergency appendectomy and a potentially fatal brain hemorrhage, made the procedure riskier than usual, the musician-turned-reality-star had a positive outlook from the start.

"It's 95 percent unbelievably great results," he said of the operation. "Of course, there's always the 5 percent risk at anything you do with this kind of thing and I'm hoping I'll be in the 95 percent category."

As for the future, Michaels has some lofty goals. "I have a shirt 'Bret Michaels for President,'" he told PopEater. "I'd be good. When I am drinking beer at the bar I have all the world's problems solved."

I am three weeks past major heart surgery. The seven days after the surgery were the hardest I have ever known. Now, I am in awe of the ability of the body to repair itself. Today I walked two miles. Bret, hang in there. There is nowhere to go but up. I wish you the best.
