Derek Hough Taking a Break From 'Dancing with the Stars'

After heating up the dancefloor for seven seasons on 'Dancing with the Stars,' Derek Hough is taking a much-deserved break from the show.

The dancer-choreographer will be spending season 12 away from the ballroom, taking time to film dance flick 'Cobu 3D' in New York and Toronto this spring.

In the film, Hough plays a New Orleans dancer who falls for the drummer of a rival dance group while trying to make it in New York.

Hough says that despite his hiatus from the ABC hit, he will return for the show's thirteenth season with renewed vigor. "I will be making it back to 'Dancing with the Stars' in the fall. I'm just taking a break and taking this chance to grow and expand a little bit as an artist," he tells PEOPLE. "I'll come back with a whole new set of skills."

Hough says of his upcoming film role, "People will see a much edgier side of me and these other styles of dancing I'm capable of doing," noting that he has already gained "about 10 lbs of muscle" in preparation for the movie's "incredible" dance numbers.

As for his bosses at ABC, they support Hough's decision to take a break from the show. 'DWTS' executive producer, Conrad Green, says, "We wish Derek the best as he takes time off from 'Dancing with the Stars' to pursue his film career and look forward to having him return to the show in the fall."

Dont care what the drummer is or isnt.He made the show fun to watch

That's your opinion. We found him annoying, a showboater who always overshadowed the partner who he was supposed to be showcasing. His ego rose above the job he was being paid to do. And all that mugging for the camera was barely high schoolish. Not saying the guy can't dance but he always had a 'ringer' to get him at least to the finals. Something tells me he would have pouted and threw a tantrum if he would have been partnered with someone like Margaret Cho. Good riddance.

Derek Hough can not take a break from DWTS because he is the best dancer and it will not be the same without him. I will not watch the show if he is not there.

This show will be toast soon, just like Idol. First, it was Julianne and now Derek. All the people that attracted you to watch the shows are leaving to go on to bigger and better things. I think most will find they had it pretty sweet just where they were.

M Peterson. I am 100% agree with you. He Derek is the best dancer, and 3 times a champion, The show without him will be boring. I am not going to watch DWTS anymore. Him and his sister Juliane were the best,now they are not there anymore. The heck with the show.
