Perez Hilton on Rihanna's 'S&M' Video: 'People Want It to Be Controversial'

Perez Hilton doesn't get all the fuss. The influential blogger is trying to make sense of the dizzying controversy surrounding
Rihanna's tongue-wagging
video for her new single 'S&M.' The kinky clip features the raven-haired hell-raiser sporting a skin-tight pink latex outfit and other bondage clothing while being hounded by reporters wearing ball gags. The fallout? 'S&M' has already been flagged by YouTube, reportedly banned in 11 countries.
Hilton appears in the clip, playfully being walked like a dog (leash and all) by Ri-Ri and pretending to pee on a fire hydrant. "That was Rihanna's idea," a laughing Perez tells
PopEater. "I really don't think it's that controversial. I think that people just want it to be controversial."
Hear more from Hilton and check out Rihanna's 'S&M' video, after the jump.
Hilton, however, does admit that when he was first asked to appear in the 'S&M' video, he was a bit apprehensive out of respect for Rihanna. "I wanted to make sure that Rihanna was comfortable with the idea and it wasn't something the director was pushing," he says. "So I spoke to the director, Melina [Matsoukas], and she told me it was actually Rihanna's idea herself to have me be in the video. I was blown away and so flattered. I instantly said yes."

The blogger says that while he had riotous fun on the set of 'S&M,' being on all fours all day was a chore. "It was a lot of hard work," he muses. "It's not easy to walk around like a dog. [Laughs] I had kneepads on, and I still left the set bruised and battered because of the friction against my knees. But I would do it all again because the response has been phenomenal."
Of course, the powerful tastemaker, who helped launch the superstar career of ubiquitous headline-maker Lady Gaga, is used to being associated with controversial artists. But even Hilton is impressed by the hoopla that Rihanna's 'S&M' music video has so far received.
"Even though the video has been flagged by YouTube it's still gotten over 2 million views in a little over a day," Hilton says. "If it hadn't been flagged as inappropriate, it would have two or three times that number!"

Banned? Why? There was nothing in there that was so terrible. She was dressed in latex. So what? Americans are such prudes.

LUV THE BEAT!!! i want to go dancing tonight.
she should have used Rob Shuter instead of Perez.
OMG..She had clothes on. GOOOO-UD will smite thee for whatching such debauchery. LOL Puh-leeeze. What's next, we bringing back the witch trials?
This is all just stupid publicity. Don't fall for it. You'll be seeing this on TV in about a month. Pure manipulation powered by greed.
you must be real young and naive. the songs good but the video is way over the top
I am not much of a fan of Rihanna's simply because all of her songs sound pretty much the same. I like her videos, though, because they are usually outrageous and it's fun to see what bizarre getups she'll be in next. As far as this one goes, I have to say I do think she's pushing the envelope a bit, but she may as well do it while she's still young and popular enough to get away with it.
Another example of how our culture is rotting away. this is pure trash.
Well the article said that it was blocked in at least 11 countries. The last time I checked America was only one nation so obviously there are other countries that are "prudes" too. Stop always looking for something to hate America over. There are probably plenty of Americans that like this video as well as plenty that hate it. Funny thing, I'm in America and just watched it. So is it blocked in America or not???
Hey MESSA
Americans?Didn't read the WHOLE article, stupid? It said 11 countries,so just don't say it's only the US.
This might be one of the better songs that she's done in awhile. And as far as the video goes, I have no problem with it. Aren't we adults? I know they show worse than this video on regular TV. This whole "Ban" thing might just be a play for pub. Rhianna even looks better than usual.
No sorry, You need to WAKE UP and realize that THIS kind of GARBAGE is NOT ACCEPTABLE Period, end of discussion! YOU need to be lead around with a dog leash!
Yeah, real prudes...uneducated teen having babies, then raising another generation of stupid humans. Paying any money to see this trash video is a waste of their welfare checks.
Not all Americans, just the ones who seem to think that we're still living 200 year's ago and have so much power to control what we should and shouldn't watch.
Whats the difference between her video to what Madonna videos were like, I just don't see the big deal ...pfft
@Messa, I agree. The song is ordinary, but I don't see anything to get the panties in a wad over. If Ri was trying for controversial or crude or whatever, all she got was silly. And that's what this whole flap is...silly. Sheesh...
The only objection I have is the use of the ridiculous Perez Hilton. He's a dweeb.
Your name says it all MESSa
You obviously are not a mom, I have four teenagers, 2 who are 17, 1 that is 16 and one 14 ! I do not want that kind of influance on my children. They see enough crap on TV as it is !! I am glad there are some people smart enough to realize this is not for kids !!! She has a great song why ruin it with a trash vidio, it is not what she is wearing.....it is the overall message and vulgarity of all the actions in this video..if i am a prude along with many others, so be it gladly !!!
I could not agree with you more.
The only thing terrible was the song itself. The video was okay. What is all the fuss about? What I find funny is that all the people being offended obviously watched it. What does that say about them then, if they find it so disgusting? It does say "adult content" now doesn't it? Why did you even watch? Bunch of hypocrites.
