Fantasia Barrino, the former 'American Idol' winner and VH1 reality star, is preparing for her return to the silver screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the multitalented performer will be playing the role of Mahalia Jackson, a late American gospel singer, in a feature-film adaption of a book about her life.Fantasia will portray the singer and civil rights advocate's journey from poverty in New Orleans to a gospel superstar and ardent supporter of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Mahalia, an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, passed away in 1982 at the age of 60.
Fantasia's personal life has been tumultuous to say the least. The 26-year-old star overdosed in the fall of 2010, and admitted it was no accident. Glad to hear Fantasia is getting a chance on the big screen. What ever happened to her reprising the role of Celie in film version of the musical The Color Purple because she was fantastic in the play.

Mahalia Jackson's playing that role.
I don't remember Mahalia Jackson singing like a duck.

I don't see this being a good movie.I think Fantaisa lacks the depth to play that role. She made a halfway decent Celie because there was already a blueprint for that role.
Beyonce all over again.
There are actual actresses who can sing... Did we forget that?

Did You Even See Her On Broadway?!?! Halfway Decent?!?!? She Was EXCELLENT!!!!!! Singing and Acting. People Are so Quick To Judge...SMH I Think She Can Pull It Off. Given That She Did A Phenomenal Job as Celie (Color Purple) On Broadway!
I deeply agree with u.
I agree with ELA. Not Sucka4love0.
And did you know that the voices of those actresses and actors are the voices of real songers like fantasia herself. anytime someone plays a singer it is never thier voice unless they are singer for real.
I thought Mahlia was fantastic! good job Jamima! hope you get the role girl. DOnt forget the weave, and remember what yo moma said.

Sorry, no one could ever portray the greatest gospel singer to ever live. Fantasia... Laughable at best...

I LOVE FANTASIA'S VOICE...SHE TELLS A STORY .
Reply
Yeah, her voice tells a story. A story no one wants to hear!
She definitely wouldn't have been a choice for me. Their singing voices are drastically different, however I hope she will be lip syncing(?).

Please dont do this a damn Joke?

Nope, nope, nope. Not even close. Visually or aurally. They would definitely have to dub in the singing. Her voice lacks the tone, richness and nuance. Sorry

That/s Fantasia in the picture above??? She actually looks beautiful for a change. What's the occasion?

Mahalia Jackson died in 1972, not 1982.

I feel Jennifer Hudson would have been a better choice! Or, better yet, Queen Latifah...

I totally agree. Queen Latifah, more mature.
