Ashlee Simpson Files for Divorce From Pete Wentz

After two and a half years of marriage, Ashlee Simpson has filed for divorce from her husband, Pete Wentz. TMZ reports that Simpson, who married the former Fall Out Boy bassist at her parents' California home in 2008, filed documents in LA County Superior Court, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the cause of their split.

The singer-actress, who has a 2-year-old son, Bronx, with Wentz, is seeking primary physical custody of the child in addition to sharing legal custody with her ex. The pair released a joint statement to PEOPLE that asked for privacy and stressed their commitment to their son.

"After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to file for divorce," the couple said through a spokesperson. "We remain friends and deeply committed and loving parents to our son Bronx, whose happiness and well-being remains our No. 1 priority. We ask that everyone honor our privacy as we navigate this next phase of our lives."

Just last month, Wentz gushed to PopEater about his excitement over spending time with his family.

"The great thing right now is that my family is very mobile and are able to tour with me," he said. "And I think that's the only thing that would've been a hurdle. But the fact they're kind of able to go, I want to be back out there."

Simpson is seeking spousal support from Wentz, with whom she reportedly had no prenup.

The couple began dating in the fall of 2006, but denied the relationship for months. They announced their engagement in April 2008 and married a month later at the Simpson family home. Her dad, Joe, a former minister, officiated the ceremony.

All divorces in CA are due to "irreconcilable differences", what's freaking new - its part of the law there.

It has nothing to do with CA, I have lived here my entire life and have just known when not to get married which seems to be never! I guess we have to applaud celeb couple like Brad & Angelina, Kurt & Goldie, etc, for being smart enough not to get married. What's the law in your state? Shot gun wedding, arranged marriage? Whatever.

They got married so that they could have a baby in wedlock. Wentz is gay and both agreed before marriage that after a certain time period, they would divorce. They both love each other as friends and the marriage was just so the kid will not be labeled a bastard.

Please, explain to me why these so called "stars" even bother getting married and having children. There is no one more important in their lives than themselves. How could they possibly share a life with anyone, including a baby?

Well, knock me over with a feather! Doesn't surprise me in the least. Yes, those two girls, whose father was a "preacher" (now a "manager"), are really leading outstanding lives and setting such a good example for the young people in this world. Too bad there are children involved. Ashley, you have your big sis to look up to and who can give you advice on how to handle life's biggest problems. Yikes--that is scary!

LOL @ everyone insulting Pete. Has anyone actually looked at him vs what he looked like 2006, even further back? Obviously he's done some growing up.
Sorry, I wouldn't even want to be in the same room with Ashlee. She's pretty gross if you ask me. And I think honestly the only reason they got married was because there was a kid involved. Their relationship wasn't that long before they decided to get hitched, so I'm sure they though "What the hell, sure, why not."
