Rapper Nicki Minaj is maybe having the best week of her young life. In its 11th week of release, the 26-year-old's debut album, 'Pink Friday,' has risen to the top of the Billboard album chart and gone platinum. But it's the love she's feeling from some very famous fans that is making headlines.
During a radio interview, pop-country sweetheart Taylor Swift was asked, "If we could play one song for you, what would it be? ... Anything you want to hear." Swift asked if she could play a non-single album cut, and when the DJ answered in the affirmative, she did not hesitate to name Minaj's 'Super Bass' as her choice.
Then she started rapping. Video, after the jump.
"Her Minajesty, I love that! That's great," Swift laughs. "This is a song that is an album cut off Nicki Minaj's album, and I've been listening to it on repeat. And I really freak my friends out because I can recite every single lyric to the rap."
At that, the DJ persuaded a reluctant "T-Swizzle" to break out an a cappella rap of a verse from 'Super Bass.'
Not bad! (Well ... A for effort?)
Swift isn't the only young star showing Minaj a little unexpected support -- allegedJustin Bieber hair-toucher Selena Gomez took to YouTube to test her own skills by rapping along to 'Super Bass.' Watch as the frilly-gown-clad tween starlet attempts to match Minaj's swagger:
By the end of the verse, Gomez gets so caught up in Her Minajesty's wicked rhymes that she turns her dressing room into a makeshift dance party. We can't say that we blame her -- here in PopEater headquarters, 'Roman's Revenge' is the jam. (We'd embed it, but our girl Nicki gets pretty saucy in the language department.)
'Pink Friday's' rise to the top is a rarity on the charts. According to Billboard, nearly all albums that hit No. 1 debut there. In 2010, 30 different albums topped the charts, but only one of them (Lil Wayne's 'I Am Not a Human Being') rose to the top instead of starting there. The 11 weeks it took Minaj's album to hit Billboard's peak is the longest ascent since the late Ray Charles' 'Genius Loves Company' rose to No. 1 in 2005 in its 25th week of release following its Album of the Year Grammy win.
