Source: Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz Married Too Young

Since Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz filed for divorce, no mistresses or cheating allegations have come forth. There have been rumors that Pete didn't want to call it quits, but Ashlee was reportedly fed up with her hubby's "erratic" behavior.

Now, a source close to Simpson tells PEOPLE that two simply married too young and weren't ready to balance their demanding work schedules with family life. "It was honestly a classic case of marrying young, having a kid young and growing apart over the years," says the source.

Ashlee and Pete married in May 2008, when Ashlee was 23 and Pete was 28, and their son Bronx Mowgli Wentz was born in November 2008. (Yes, do the math. Ash was certainly no virgin bride like big sis Jessica claimed to be when she first tied the knot!)

Ashlee has kept a low profile to focus on raising her 2-year-old son, but she's missed working and being in the spotlight. "Ashlee was the one with Bronx a lot of the time, and that's a lot," the source says. "Ashlee loves being a mom, but she also loves being a performer and she wants to badly get back to that."

Pete was "away from (Ashlee and Bronx) a ton working himself, and the balance was just off." Ashlee, who is 26, isn't the first in her famous family to have an early marriage and divorce. Her big sister Jessica was married at 22 and divorced at 24.

Despite the stories surrounding Ashlee and Pete's split, the two are said to be working things out "amicably" and have said they "remain friends and deeply committed and loving parents to our son Bronx, whose happiness and well-being remains our No.1 priority."

They didn't get married too young.....They only married because she was pregnant. Pappa Joe wasn't going to let one of his little money making darlings have a child out of wed-lock. That would tarnish his minister-business manager status.

They weren't married too young.......They were married too pregnant. Pappa Joe wouldn't want one of his money making children to tarnish his reputation as a minister or business manager. Guess he isn't so good at managing their love lives.

Doesn't matter what age you marry if you remain a self-absorbed made-up personality without any talent. Your life is going to be one basket case until you wake up and be honest with yourself and that, of course, will never happen.

Their age has nothing to do with it. I do think in these times, marriage doesn't mean what it used to and so many don't even bother with that. Women have that independent feeling and don't have to stay in a marriage. It is possible to move on and I'm not sure "That Old Feeling" still applies. Too bad!

I remember hearing Pete has manic-depression (bipolar). If that is the case, it can be very hard on a relationship. My ex had the same diagnosis. It may not matter how much you love someone if it puts your child in harm's way. You do what is best to raise your child in a stable environment.

Its more about how mature these people are, or are not.
Being married means hard work, working to treat each other with respect. If a person loves someone, they should treat them as they would want to be treated.
I got married at 18, and were still married 34 years later.
Only because we have been through everything together, and we treat each other good, 'most of the time.'
Theres lots of hard work being married, if a person cant be generous, and respectfull, dont do it.

Married too young??? Are you kidding me??? I was 22 and my husband was 23 when we were married and it's been over 30 years. Maybe she got pregnant too young and then had to get married to someone who she really didn't want to marry. Don't blame getting married to young on this please!

Here we go again does anyone take marriage serious?I think if couples would put more time on working on the mariage,the same way they put all the effort in having a perfect wedding,so much time is put on getting the perfect dress, the flowers,venue etc,etc just maybe the marriage would stand a chance,life is not perfect work it out.

Young people are constantly exposed to sexually overt imagery. Young women in particular are encouraged to objectify themselves from an increasingly young age, but when women end up pregnant outside of marriage it is still considered notable.
