Madonna's Brother Slams Lady Gaga as a Copycat
Sure, there are two decades between the
two songs in question, but Christopher Ciccone, younger brother of
Madonna, says he's nevertheless astounded at how similar Lady Gaga's new single,
'Born This Way,' sounds to one of his sister's beloved anthems, 1989's 'Express Yourself.'
Gaga intends to perform her instant hit song at the Grammy Awards tonight, but first, Ciccone wanted the chance to express himself to
RadarOnline this weekend.
"All I can say is 'What the F--K!" the director-designer says. "It sounds just like 'Express Yourself.' I can't believe it to tell you the truth."
As soon as the Gaga single debuted, listeners online began buzzing about the familiar beat, melody and vocals. Even the
Washington Post described 'Born This Way' as "vaguely" reminiscent of the Madonna hit.
But Ciccone seems outraged, not flattered. Now 50, he was closely involved in Madonna's career when 'Express Yourself' was one of her signature songs, and he worked on the design and direction of her wildly successful tours during that era.
These days, Ciccone is reportedly estranged from his famous sibling, after penning the tell-all 'Life With My Sister Madonna' in 2008. Just last month, he analyzed Madge's obvious influence on Gaga's successful career, telling
RadarOnline: "I can see a lot of my sister's influence in what Lady Gaga is doing today. It's like 'Madonna on speed' actually....I think Lady Gaga is a great writer, singer, and performance artist, but sometimes she goes too far with her costumes and persona and it must be hard for her fans to identify with that."

I'm not really a Gaga fan and I love Madonna. But I have to say, this sounds to me like someone trying desperately to get their 15 minutes of fame by being related to a star. Madonna isn't even speaking to him because he exploited their relationship by writing a book. He's an idiot for even thinking his opinion matters at this point.

Been around since Madonna, and BORN THIS WAY immediately reminded me of EXPRESS YOURSELF. I think Christopher has a right to say what he feels, and regardless of his motives, I feel he is 100% correct here.

I listened to Gaga's song for first time yesterday, and I can see the "Express Yourself" sound but overall I think the song sounds more like Old School Disco

To call her a "copycat" is like calling every band since 1964 copycat's of the Beatles. Or Elvis a copycat of Sinatra. It's music & trends continue. Madonna had her time 25 years ago. I don't care for Gaga's music, but she does have talent & she's HOT!

I think Gaga is losing the music. She is so busy with the "shock value" of her performances,the music is starting to suffer. This song was a disappointment...couldn't make out half if what she said and it seemed labored.As for who owns the song...who cares...she needs to concentrate on the music and can some of the theatrics.

it doesnt matter HOW MANY decades between songs, this is a HUGE ripoff. It's not like GAGA took an obscure track and made it her own. NO, she stole one of Madonnas BIGGEST HITS. Fo Shame...fo Shame.

Sorry, but Lady Gaga is a rip-off. I heard 30 seconds of her performance tonight, and it does sound like Madonna; but there is no originality anywhere in music..........

Ha, i spoke to two friends on the phone during her performance and said geez that song sounds like she stole parts of Express Yourself from Madonna. she ain't no madonna....she is nothing more than a cheap knock off....send her back from where she came from.

Larry - Madonna may be 52, but that doesn't lessen her talent - or looks. Remember there would be no Lady GaGa without Madonna - and there would not have been Madonna without the ultimate CHER

Everbody thinks Madonna is so original and that is laughable. Most of her signature looks are copied! All of the past greats she raps about in Vogue are the victims of her theft. As for her brother, he is a middle-aged, fat, balding wanna-be who is jealous of somebody half his age. Grow up! Your sista isn't all that!

Not a very big Madonna fan but I did like a couple of her songs including that one and it does seem Lady Gaga though very talented did get all of her influence from express yourself for her new song

I don't mnd Lady Gaga as being the new age Madonna, but as soon as heard this song I was like.."That is Madonna's Express Yourself song! I was a huge Madonna fan, so I picked it right up! I have kind of lost respect for Lady Gaga for insisting she wrote the song. She may have written the lyrcs but she did not write the music.
