Who is Esperanza Spalding? The 26-year-old jazz bassist who snatched the Best New Artist Grammy out of the hands of Justin Bieber, that's who.
Although cameras quickly cut away, Bieber's disappointment at the announcement seemed clear. The AP reports Spalding had just one Grammy nomination entering the show's 53rd annual ceremony Sunday night.
Drake, Mumford & Sons and Florence and the Machine were also nominated. While a lot of people will spend the wake of Bieber's Best New Artist loss figuring out who Spalding is, there's little doubt she's extremely talented.
"From the time Esperanza Spalding appeared on the scene in 2005, the dynamic singer, bassist, composer and arranger has been heralded as jazz's next big thing," the AP wrote in a lead-up to the Grammys. "Her impressive musicianship has won her White House recital dates, praise from the likes of Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock, and critical acclaim."
"I am new in that I haven't been around that long, and I'm an artist," Spalding told AOL's Spinner in January, following her Grammy nomination. "So it fits. Somebody out there thinks that in their mind that I am one of the best. It's flattering. I'll take it."
Spalding's third album, 'Chamber Music Society,' dropped in the summer of 2010. Co-producer Gil Goldstein told the AP of Spalding's nomination, "I've been kind of joking, saying it would be nice that if once in a while, the best new artist would be someone who reads and writes [music]."

Spinner's in-depth interview with Spalding gave a solid glimpse into her career: "I like to work. I like music," she explained. "The real issue is that the solo career is the odd man out in my life right now. I have much more experience playing bass for other bandleaders than leading my own gigs, and I love being a sideman just as much. That's why I got into music. It wasn't to become my own phenomenon; it was to play music with other people. So whomever wants to play with me, and I can, and I'm into it, and inspired? Then off I go."

WTH! How can you even chose someone as Best New Artist who isn't even known??? I don't get it. If she was the best, shouldn't we have all heard of her???????
YOU are not voting so what YOU know does not count. WE in the industry are voting, and WE know that SHE is better than HE, has been and always will be.
No. Justin Bieber isn't the MOST talented but everyone knows him. I am very happy that she won, because it shows that jazz still lives and is going very strong. She is VERY talented, and nobody can say she isn't.
Everyone who loves jazz knows who she is. She's very talented. May I suggest before you form an opinion, listen to her music and then draw your conclusion. This is in no way meant to disrespect your opinion. I love Justin Bieber too, but everyone can't win.
NO!.. Just because she hasn't been heard of doesn't mean she isn't the best.. Actually in reality the best rarely make it to the Grammy's. SO KUDOS TO HER!!! She may not be the most popular.. but she's definitely one of the best NEW talent out there.. No pre-packaged marketing gimmick like the rest!
For all these people defending this decision, I wonder how you can justify a best NEW artist Grammy going to someone who has been in the business for more than FOUR YEARS. Forget what defines "best" and remember that the whole point of this category is recognize who is best out of the pool of NEW talent on the scene. She may very well be the best in the group of artists nominated, but she certainly can't be considered NEW when she was releasing music as far back as 2006.
It depends on what circles you travel in. Lot's of people have heard of her. she's been on letterman, and other T.V. shows. Justin B. is very big talent. But if you go to Youtube you'll see they made the right choice.
Well, she's been famous enough to release three albums, play at the last presidential inauguration, win accolades from people like Stevie Wonder and Prince, play with some of the best jazz bandleaders, be in a Banana Republic print ad, and generally carve out a nice career for herself.
As far as who's new or not, Justin's been around since 2009, so he should not have been in the new category if you base the same criteria on all nominees. Whitney Houston was denied the chance for New Artist after the release of her first CD because she had recorded a track with Jermaine Jackson on his album the year before.
Honey, just because YOU haven't heard of her doesn't mean the rest of the world hasn't. That overexposed brat Justin isn't all that new and it's time to step aside for one minute, GOD. He's everywhere with his music and a movie. Newsflash, the "new" part is pretty much over. He's established. This young woman is semi-known. And depending how much music you listen to, you'd know about her. This is real talent and for once, a REAL newbie.
"Best" doesn't mean "most popular." It's a measure of quality, not quantity.
Just because no one *you* know of has heard of her doesn't mean she is an unknown. Her album topped the jazz charts for 62 weeks. She performed for President Obama (twice). She was a part of the Prince tribute at the 2010 BET Awards. She performed with Prince on his NYC dates. You could even have previewed her album on the NPR web site last year.
Actually, just because something is popular doesn't mean it is good. Do you truly believe that the music fed to you through the radio and tv stations is ACTUAL music? Ha! I'm so glad that little Beiber brat didn't win....a real musician won for a change.
She already has started to get threats. The Bieber Brats have attacked her Wikipedia page and they had to shut it down. Those Bieber Brats need to chill out!
Ms Spalding is talent that has not came along in a long time. It just keeps my hope up that someday that the music industry will start to bring back real talent.

Somehow...people knew/know about her.
