Singer Rufus Wainwright and Partner Have a Baby Girl

Canadian singer Rufus Wainwright announced last Friday that he is the proud father of new baby girl Viva Katherine Wainwright Cohen.

Cohen? Yes, as in legendary crooner Leonard Cohen, daughter Lorca was the mother of the baby for Wainwright and his fiancé, Jorn Weisbrodt.

"Darling daughter Viva Katherine Wainwright Cohen was born on February 2, 2011 in Los Angeles, California to proud parents Lorca Cohen, Rufus Wainwright and Deputy Dad Jorn Weisbrodt. Lorca Cohen is the mother of the baby and Rufus Wainwright is the father." said a statement on Wainwright's website.

"The little angel is evidently healthy, presumably happy and certainly very, very beautiful. Daddy #1 would like to offer everyone a digital cigar and welcome the little lady in with a French phrase from his favorite folk song, A La Claire Fontaine: "Il y a longtemps que je t'aime, jamais je ne t'oublierai."

This is the first baby for Wainwright -- who released his sixth studio album, 'All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu,' last year -- and given those incredible genes, we'll likely see Viva Katherine lighting up the stage alongside her famous family in the years to come.

Check your facts! Ms. Cohen is not a surrogate - she's the biological mother of the child! You can cross check this on Wainwright's site's news section.

No one called her a surrogate. It says clearly in the article that she is the mother.

call me old fashioned, this is just too much for me...a daughter for two men that are engaged. geez, i am so sick of heterosexual couples having kids that arent engaged or married. guess, at least they are engaged, but it is just too confusing for the kids, all this crap. again, call me old fashioned, but i feel whats best for children is a mom and dad and marriage.strictly for the kids sake, especially for later on..these other relationships are weird for the kids and their friends.

This is a beautiful example of a New Definition of Family. IMO it is just as viable as a traditional family. Rufus and Lorca are among a group of a second-generation of close family friends and hugely talented kids of Folk Rock royalty - Leonard Cohen, Linda & Richard Thompson, Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III. Rufus and Lorca have been friends since childhood and both clearly wanted to be parents. They likely love each other enough to trust that they can raise a child or children together. I think their choice is brave and honest, just like Rufus and his music. Bravo for the happy family!

One of the happiest most functional families I've ever known is made of 2 dear gay friends of mine who adopted a little girl from birth a few years ago. They are wonderful fathers and she is delightful and thriving.

I can see how the concept might be strange or unsettling to people who don't have any close relationships with gay people (that you know of!), but if you open your mind, eyes and heart you just might be surprised.

Perhaps not your version of normal. But in my version, it looks like people with the emotional and financial wherewithal to have a child, had a child. That's enough for me.

I'm quite certain that poverty and abuse have more to do with "screwing up kids" than whether or not their parents were heterosexual and married or homosexual and not married.

Whos to say what is the best for a child, in this day and age.
I was raised with the traditional type of family, it was horrible. And I am not the only one who knows how messed up a family can be. Then to add children to it, is the worst thing a couple can do, but they keep doing it. So if two men, or two woman, love each other enough, and have the desire to raise children why not? No one can say the effect it will have on children, this is still a new thing. These two men, cant possibly be as bad as some parents are. And what makes it worse is the abusive parents dont even know their abusive. They think its normal, because thats the way they were raised, and the cycle continues.
