Charlie Sheen's struggle with addiction and the actor's wild behavior have been tabloid fodder for two decades, and now his family is speaking out about how they're dealing with his demons.
In an interview with the U.K.'s Sky News, Sheen's father, acting legend Martin Sheen, and brother, Emilio Estevez, open up about how Charlie's struggles have affected their lives and how they're hoping to help him through.
Martin Sheen said of his son's struggle, "He's an extraordinary man. If he had cancer, how would we treat him? The disease of addiction is a form of cancer, and you have to have an equal measure of concern and love and lift them up, so that's what we do for him."

They better call in the Regulators

They need Alanon. What Martin is talking about is detachment. Detachment leads one out of the obsession to control anothers behavior whatever that may be. In other words codependence does not work. Interdependence is what is required.

Charlie looks older than his own father! Such a shame for all concerned! And it all needless!

That is exactly what I thought when I saw that picture. His life style has really aged him. This picture could be a poster on why not to use drugs.
Charlie looks drunk in that picture.

Looks really bad. What a shame. Life is short. What can ya do, father Sheen? He has to want to get well. Up to him...

Not sure if that picture is old or new. But it looks like Charlie was not feeling very well. His family is doing the best they can and all anyone can do.

More Emilio, less Charlie.

This idea is better than yelling, and talking negativly to the one on drugs. It only makes the user run from them, and may be they will never see him again while he is still alive.
If a intervention doesnt work, what else can they do?
Enjoy what time they have left with him, thats all they can do apparently..
Gosh he looks horrible.

Being addicted to hookers IS NOT CANCER. FFS, that is offensive. I get that he is addicted to drugs and alcohol and that he has a problem with partying, but he has shown exactly ZERO remorse or even concern for his behaviour. In fact, it seems like he enjoys rubbing it in everyone's face. He doesn't need concern and love, he needs a slap on the back of the head. There are never any consequences for his behaviour - why would he stop?

I personally offended that he has referred addiction to cancer.
Being that my father died from cancer - who worked his whole life for a family of 10 and had his Sundays with the family, having his few beers and watching sports.....clearly was not addicted to cancer.
Martin, you picked the wrong word to reference addiction. People really try hard to cure their cancer - it is obvious addicts have a different perspective on saving their ownself.

But Charlie has always wanted to do things "Charlie's way". I've heard stories that he or his brother, Emilio, told in front of the camera.
1. Emilio said in an interview once, his parents were hippies, and his mother would cook breakfast naked. That might do some damage to the psyche of a young Carlos Irwin Estevez.
2. Charlie told a high school teacher he was lucky he hadn't clobbered him yet.
Some people are just troubled individuals for this reason or that. At 46, Charlie isn't going to change. Even Robert Downey changed, but wasn't he like 30 when he did? The older you are, the harder to change that behavior.

I am sorry but addiction is not a disease. Charlie Sheen drunk and high with prostitutes does not equal my dad dying of heart disease. Martin needs to tough love his son. Fire Charlie and let him move to the gutter for a while. That might be an incentive to straighten up.

I have always enjoyed Charlie Sheen as an actor. But enough is enough. When Martin Sheen describes Charlies addiction to drugs and hookers to cancer, now I see where the problem lies. Its quite obvious the people surrounding Charlie are just trying to make excuses for him maybe so he can keep his job. I think its time to wake up and see Charlie for what he really is at this point in his life, a drug addict. I had two siblings that fought for their lives against cancer and lost, I'm disgusted that Martin Sheen could possibly think there is a similarity in what is going on with his son Charlie. Charlie needs help NOT excuses!

Charlie Sheen is nothing more than the white washed version of OJ Simpson.
