Tom Cruise has been cast to play a heavy metal rocker in the big screen adaptation of the popular Broadway musical 'Rock of Ages.' The film's director, Adam Shankman, revealed the confirmed casting to Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet at the Oscars, reports UsMagazine.com.
'Rock of Ages' is set in 1987 on the Sunset Strip, where a small town girl meets a big city rocker in LA's most famous rock club, and they fall in love to the greatest songs of the '80s.
Cruise, 48, is set to play fiction metal singer 'Stacee Jaxx' and will be singing the Bon Jovi classic 'Wanted Dead or Alive' in the film. When asked how the 'Mission: Impossible' actor was when it came to singing, Shankman replied, "He can sing! It's a miracle." Watch a performance of the song from the musical after the jump.
And it looks like the actor is working hard to perfect his role. Shankman said that Cruise was studying the required vocals and even checked out a performance of the show last week.
Cruise seems to be sort-of following in the footsteps of his wife Katie Holmes, who in 2008 went to Broadway to act in 'All My Sons.'
Her performance did not win too many rave reviews; let's hope Cruise can do better.
Jon Hamm, star of the hit series "Mad Men", is spotted filming scenes for the upcoming season. Jon was all smiles while filming in a red, vintage Imperial convertible.
Another case of bonehead character. The character is supposed to be in his early 20s, just getting started. Cruise, in his late 40s, is too old. Here's an idea, why not let the guy who's been doing the show for years and won a Tony nomination for the role have a stab at it? Just thinking.....
NO! GAG!! How much longer will we be tortured by this man? He is a has been and is so far out in left field he is irrelevant! Give it a rest Tom and just do your "church" thing and leave us alone. I will never see a movie of his- he is just too weird!
I would rather do anything else, than to sit and watch tommy boy. And who would pay to see him any way,, no one I know. The guy is weird, and is way too self aborbed.
What the hell is Adam Shankman thinking??? One movie I will never watch. Just think of thye blood loss from your ears if there is a soundtrack!!! Hmmmmm
Fantastic! Tom Cruise is just what a bloated film adaptation of a crappy 'jukebox musical' needs. This promises to be the worst movie musical since 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'(a film that killed the careers of Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees), and is sure to be another nail in Cruise' coffin. I can;t wait.
Bette Midler ROCKED in The Rose! You must be mistaken... one of the major upsets in Oscar history. Bette Midler deserved that Oscar for Best Actress in 1979.
I loved this show on Broadway, and will probably watch the movie, even though the director/producer struck out on this casting decision. How do you cast Tom Cruise to play Stacee Jaxx??? The obvious choice for this role was JON BON JOVI!!! He's got some serious acting credits to his name, and I'm pretty sure Dead or Alive is HIS SONG!
However, glancing over the IMDB page of this show, I'll give them credit on one of there other calls. Alec Baldwin was the perfect cast for Dennis. And Russell Brand as Lonnie would probably work well too, but that ones only "rumored" right now according to the site.
What a silly mommy! Katie Holmes takes Suri into the water in her clothes as the two spend the afternoon at the beach in Miami. More of Today's Hottest Photos

Tom Cruise is as relevant as an 8 track player is.

You can say that again. Go ahead...I'll wait.

That's one movie I will definitely NOT see. Tom Cruise needs to get over himself, and then just go away.

Cruise: The queen of self infatuation. Some day he should consider making a movie worth watching.

Exactly. It's the only Shankman film that I will never see - like all Cruise projects, they go in the 'never watch in a million years' junk pile.
'Rock of Ages', a Shankman/Scientology Production featuring Tom Cruise. Available sooner than you think at a video store near you.

I think Framptom singing with the Bee Gees killed Frampton, the Bee gees were going the way of the Disco dinosaur anyway.
Tommy girl just doesn't get it. He's WAY too old to do this movie. This looks like it will be another Cruisey craptacular and a definite must-miss.

By the looks of Cruise in the article pic, there'll be more Botox on that set than at a Joan Rivers Tupperware party.
Cruise is sure to desecrate rock-and-roll the same way Bette Midler did in The Rose. I just know this is gonna suck.

Just one more thing Cruise can't let wife Katie be better at than him--being on Broadway. Just has to do it so he can 'best' the wifelet.
