It seems that Andy Cohen, the Bravo exec and genial host of all the 'Housewives' reunion shows, did not like the Oscar ceremony. At all. But it wasn't James Franco's lethargic performance, Anne Hathaway's cheerleader perkiness or the sheer length of the show. No, the culprit was -- are you ready for this? -- the children's choir from Public School 22 in Staten Island, who performed a rousing rendition of 'Over the Rainbow' to close the broadcast. No lump in Cohen's throat, just bile.
"It was just bad," he professed on MSNBC's 'Morning Joe' on Tuesday. "It was just awful. It was horrible."
Not finished chiding the kids, he carried on about how much he abhorred the performance. "I literally -- if I wasn't going to go out to some parties I would have slit [my wrists] right then. It was the worst. I was looking for a knife to stick in my eyes, it was so terrible." Ouch.
Cohen compared them to Up With People, a singing group from the '70s. They were a saccharine choir made up of fresh-scrubbed teens with sensible haircuts (no long hair on the boys).
So what was it exactly about those munchkins clad in multi-hued tees that so offended the man who brings us 'Housewives,' 'Millionaire Matchmaker' and 'Tabatha's Salon Takeover'?
"Not the time," said Cohen firmly. "Everything has its time and place. The end of the Oscars is -- we don't want to see this. You just ruined everything."
Gregg Breinberg, P.S. 22's charismatic choral director, had a quick retort, telling the New York Daily News, "Anyone who would diss 10-year-old public school kids probably has some issues."
By Tuesday night, Cohen labeled himself the "Jackhole of the Week" during a segment on 'Watch What Happens Live.' He said that he was a product of public education and that the school kids didn't deserve his dissing.
I so totally agree. That doesn't mean the kids sucked, it's just a night of glitz and glamour and you get a large group of kids who are irrelevant to the purpose and it was just like the elephant in the chica cabinet. Totally didn't flow. There's a time for kids group singing and I agree with Bravo, the kids song just totally ruined it for me!!!
Totally agree. It was just wrong. I got up and went to the bathroom...have no interest in hearing that. Kids in tshirts is not appropriate ending for a glitzy Hollywood event. Use them at a football game or something like that - not at the Oscars.
Who cares what this guy thinks? He is clearly taste-impaired himself. He is the clod who brought us Millionaire Matchmaker and Tabatha's Salon Makeover, right? YUCK! I am puzzled as to why he was even invited on Morning Joe.
I guess the writer of this might need some more schooling. "They was......."???? Any writer even pretending to have any skill should know that it should be 'They were....". Nicki Gostin, maybe you were asleep or missed that lesson in school?
I don't know how the children acted back stage BUT for Andy Cohen to say that these children shouldn't of sang at the end of the awards is beyond ridiculous! The children sang perfectly and I am very certain the children worked just as hard as the STARS did for their awards. Andy, you get a flat ZERO for no tolerance!
To me, this was the HIGHLIGHT of the show. If anyone thinks Franco and Hathaway were better, you need your heads examined. The only thing I would say was better than the finale was none other than, Billy Crystal. BRING BACK BILLY!
These kids are great. The music director has done a tremendous job with them.I keep them in my favorites and click them on when I'm a little down.PS22.Their harmony, unpretentious kids. You Tube has tremendous sights on them.Who is this Cohen guy?Trying to steal the kids thunder or is envy making him act like that.Grow up!!
the end of the Oscars is the time for getting ready to get wasted at the party.....I mean really, how dare they have these beautiful children sing at such a vile event.
Who cares what Andy Cohen thinks? Whoopee he brought us "housewives" and this makes him an expert in what? Definetely not children's choirs! Those kids did a great job! Apparently he missed the message.....think about it moron, maybe you will see the message! Oh, and could you please get lost for the rest of my lifetime?
Damn the KIDS were the best part of this terrible show!!!! Is this guy for real?? Who the hell is this guy anyway and what purpose does he serve in our society??? Lets see if he droped dead tomorrow would anyone miss him? Truly doubt it!!
