Is Charlie Sheen Bipolar? Mental Health Experts Say 'His Head Is as Large as the Moon'

It's the week that
Charlie Sheen came unhinged. Since production on his uber-popular sitcom 'Two and a Half Men' was derailed over fallout from his latest bender, the star has been on a frenzied media blitz -- apparently to promote the drug he says he's on, "Charlie Sheen."
The feverish interviews have teetered between neurotic and delusional. His self-described "grandiose" behavior has led some to speculate that the 45-year-old actor may have bipolar disorder.
"He looks bipolar -- he's in a particularly manic phase," celebrity psychology expert Stuart Fischoff tells
PopEater. "His reality testing has been severely impaired, marked by delusions of grandeur. His head now is as large as the moon."
Bipolar disorder is characterized by dramatic, often violent mood swings between extreme euphoria and deep depression, though there are milder versions of the condition. In the manic state, a person can become abnormally energized; suffer from chronic insomnia; embark on wild spending, sex or drug sprees; and experience delusions of grandeur or paranoia.
Even Sheen himself admits that his mind works differently than other people's -- though he sounds like he thinks he's superhuman.
"You borrow my brain for five seconds and just be like, 'Dude, can't handle it! Unplug this bastard!'"
Sheen tells ABC's Andrea Canning during an interview that aired in full Tuesday night on '20/20.' "It fires in a way that is perhaps not from this terrestrial realm."
And he doesn't outright deny he's manic depressive when told that some are calling him bipolar, though he does take a shot at those with the illness.
"Wow! What does that mean?" he says. "Wow. And then what? What's the cure? Medicine? Make me like them? Not gonna happen. I'm bi-winning. I win here, and I win there. Now what? If I'm bipolar, aren't there moments where a guy, like, crashes, like, in the corner, like, 'Oh my God, it's all my mom's fault'? Shut up. Shut up! Stop! Move forward."
Of course, the massive amounts of cocaine and crack that Sheen has bragged about doing can also lead to bipolar-like symptoms.
"Cocaine produces a heightened state of what looks like mania -- a hyper-manic state -- and it also produces a crash," explains Fischoff, a senior editor at the Journal of Media Psychology.
Addictions specialist Bruce Goldman, of Zucker-Hillside Hospital in Long Island, N.Y., says regular, heavy drug use twists how someone sees the world.
"Chronic substance abuse problems tend to distort people's perceptions of reality," he explains. "When confronted with the consequences of their use, they can become defensive and counterattack or project blame onto others."
But Fischoff doesn't think the actor's excessive drug-taking is the whole story.
"It's hard to imagine he could be this way without having a predisposition to bipolarity beforehand," he tells
PopEater. "This is not simply a reactive psychosis to drugs. My guess is that cocaine has aggravated and exacerbated it."
In fact, people with addiction problems are more likely to also have psychiatric conditions than those in the general population, according to Goldman. Many sufferers of mental illness abuse illegal drugs and alcohol in order to cope.
"Usually people who are dealing with a psychiatric disorder self-medicate," Fischoff says. "They turn to alcohol and drugs and sex to deal with the fact that they don't want to live in their own head."
University of Pennsylvania psychiatrist Dr. Christos Ballas has a different take on Sheen. Though he agrees that the actor's behavior resembles that of a bipolar person, he says there are countless other ways to explain it.
"It's hard to say it's bipolar disorder because there's a million different things that look just like it," Ballas tells
PopEater. "If he walked into my office, I wouldn't know what to give him. It's impossible to diagnose without drawing a lot of blood and running a lot of tests."
Among the other potential causes for Sheen's erratic antics: a nervous breakdown brought on by acute stress, alcohol or drug withdrawal; alcoholism; lack of sleep; a mixing of medications; or even a bad case of really intense acting, according to Ballas.
"Mania looks like what he's doing, but I can't tell you he's manic," he says. "There's a lot going on in his life. I don't know that he isn't making it up."
The latest round of Sheen madness began after a drug-and-drink-soaked night last month during which the star landed in the hospital with a "hernia." He then reportedly went to rehab and stopped work on 'Men' temporarily.
But as speculation swirled around whether he'd be out in time to finish filming, the actor suddenly seemed to crack again, taking to the radio airwaves to spew vitriol about CBS and his boss, show creator Chuck Lorre.
"Look at what I'm dealing with, man. I'm dealing with fools and trolls," Sheen told radio personality Alex Jones. "I don't have time for these clowns. I don't have time for their judgment and stupidity."
Lorre specifically was lambasted as a "clown" and a "charlatan," and referred to as "Chaim Levine" in what sounded like an anti-Semitic epithet.
"There's nothing this side of deplorable that a certain 'Chaim Levine' (yeah, that's Chuck's real name) mistook this rock star for his own selfish exit strategy, bro," Sheen ranted. "I embarrassed him in front of his children and the world by healing at a pace that his unevolved mind cannot process. Last I checked, Chaim, I've spent close to the last decade effortlessly and magically converting your tin cans into pure gold."
CBS and Warner Brothers TV subsequently yanked 'Men' for the rest of the season. The show, for which Sheen was paid $2 million an episode, is now in jeopardy of being canceled for good.
Since then, we've witnessed Sheen out there on his own (his loyal longtime publicist even quit), sounding off about everything from how proud he is of his hard partying to how angry he is at the sitcom's producers for kicking him to the curb.
Whatever may be wrong with Charlie Sheen, Ballas says some of what he's been rambling about does make a little sense.
"I do agree with him -- all his family and friends have abandoned him," he tells
PopEater. "If they wanted to help him out, they could have. Instead, they're going to profit from this craziness."

Ratings on the show did not drop because a few stuffed shirts like you stopped watching it, where are you getting your info? Ratings were higher than ever, why do you think CS thinks he has so much power?
I don't think he can win....I can't believe that his contract doesn't have some "personal conduct" clauses in it, especially since he has a reputation for this kind of behavior. Up to now, CBS and the show's producers have given his behavior a "wink and a nod" since the show was so popular. But this latest episode apparently was the straw that broke the camel's back, especially with the anti-semitic remarks about the executive producer. The ABC interview certainly has done nothing to up Sheen's stock in the eyes of most people. The guy is a whacko...why doesn't he just OD and end the suspense and drama. His career is pretty much down the toilet now anyway...
Cheers! And once working in the film industry, I can tell you, studio heads, producers, and department heads have destroyed more lives and spirits than 10,000 Charlie Sheens ever could.
He critisized the "jew", that's why CBS cut the show. They probably dealt him the crack themselves
It kind of struck me that he looks like a different "Charlie" living with Squeeky Fromme and Linda Kasabian......

Totally agree with you! the bit about his perfect life and goddesses and the "b-winning" thing....sounds just like Manson! creepy
No Charlie is just a loud mouth. The network needs to stand their ground the last this they need to do is knuckle under to a drug using pervert. Enough of this guy just another piece of manure

I'm pretty sure Charlie Sheen has bipolar disorder. I just hope that he's received like any person who has any type of physical ailment because society sets its medical rules and if you suffer some type of ailment that isn't physical you are shunned. The entire human body can suffer and need treatment including the brain. But why is it when people have a psychological need for treatment, people treat them with different behavior? Get Charlie on the course of recovery he needs. Start with seroquel, he looks like he could use the sleep.

Charlie, like many other "characters"was created by the media. And CBS by promoting the show, embraced his life style. Its human nature to go with that flow. Not rocket science......

has anyone considered why the network is cancelling the show?the show, among other things revolves around the main character's inability to control his partying.the network cannot condone charlie sheen's behaviour by showing episode after episode of what he's doing in real life.(being girl and alcohol crazy).there would be too much backlash for the network to continue to air a series where art imitates life.way too much liability involved.
Charlie looks as though he has been awake for days....and he sounds manic!!! His taste in women is definitely questionable. Those two losers are probably spending money like crazy while he rants endlessly for the cameras. I understand one is a porn star and the other is a model. If so she is the homeliest model I've ever seen. I think his baby mama's should keep their kids far far away from the circus he currently has surrounding him.

I have to laugh at the media and others who have begun a smear campaign against Charlie Sheen's goddesses. They might be the only source of persuasion to get Charlie to agree to under go treatment. Obviously, someone should council them and act before Charlie runs out of time.

Wow,
Accusing friends and family of "abandoning" him is so off the mark. At some point people have to walk away from addicts to protect themselves and their own sanity. This guy is poisonous!

Maybe he thinks he is still in the spirit world! (Young Guns)

Not that Charlie will read this but I just have to say it. He should be ashamed of himself, other then the obvious of drugs and such but the way he talks about his father. Hey s**t for brains you should at least have some respect for him. I used to like you even with all your problems but the things you have said about everything you just turn my stomach. How is that for the truth. You so much want the truth and say you speak the truth well here it is. If so many people are saying you are nuts and way out there then you must be. I don't care if your brain works differently then others you are so full of yourself it's really not attractive. You don't even have a clue how ridiculous you sound. You have no respect for any one or anything how can anyone have respect for you. One last thing, GET OVER YOURSELF!

I think you haters are waiting for him to implode. This will not happen. He is supersmart and can handle the drugs and alcohol. I believe him when he says that it's over with the drugs. He has shown great restraint while under attack. Put yourself in his position - wild night out leading to losing your job and kids!!! Multiply this with and by big money and you end up with this obvious example. You and I are not to judge. You and I would do the same.

wrong Roy I don't know what planet you are from. I would never carry on like Charlie who in their right mind wants to be on drugs and die. Maybe you are just like him that's why you feel the way you do for him.
Charlie is not smart and obviously cannot handle the drugs - hence this last few weeks of unravelling. Being an addict he will go back and his rehab was a joke! He showed no restraint with his rants on radio and now on TV interviews. He is a moron with money and that does not make him special. I have money and I am not a cokehead. So no we are not the same and don't speak on behalf of those you don't know. Isn't that judging us?
I used to love to watch two and a half men. But the turn about of events with the stability of Charlie, it is now scary. Charlie will be his only demise . Cannot enjoy watching the show anymore. He defiantly needs help and not the girlfriends. Mental help , maybe a family member will love him enough to force him to seek help .Right now Charlie cannot separate his role in the show from real life. He is presently living the role.
