Sanjaya's New Role? A 7-Year-Old 'Jock Hearthrob'

For his latest transformation, Sanjaya Malakar has lost the faux-hawk and wacky outfits of his 'American Idol' days and turned to the NYC stage. The singer-actor is a new star of 'Freckleface Strawberry,' an Off-Broadway musical based on a book by actress Julianne Moore. But while in real life, Sanjaya still exudes that sugar-sweet personality that charmed TV viewers in 2007, in 'Freckleface' he's playing a "7-year-old jock."

"Yeah, it kinda fit!" he told me. "The character is kinda like the school jock heartthrob."

Sanjaya is part of a small cast of seven people, so most of the songs are done as ensemble. The 'Idol' alum does get his own song, though, and of course it's about basketball.

The experience, he says, is in some ways harder than his days on 'Idol,' because you "do have to be really consistent, but 'Idol' is more mentally taxing."

"[On 'Idol'] you have to be consistent, but you do different things, so you can like, find your niche with different songs," he explains. "But with this you have to do the exact same thing, you know, over and over again."

AT LEAST SHE'S HAPPY!!!

SANJAYA as a seven year old with a beard? Looks more like a 35 year old with progeria. Casting him as a seven year old makes as much sense as casting a rap star in the role of Cochise.
