Phil Collins has decided to bow out from the business that made him. The British singer has reportedly told FHM that he is leaving the music industry due to health problems he's experienced for several years.
The 'Sussudio' entertainer revealed that years of sitting hunched behind his drum kit have left him with an array of medical issues. Collins' ailments range from hearing loss to a dislocated vertebra and nerve damage in the same hands he uses to hold drumsticks, making performing for fans an otherwise painful experience.
Collins apologizes that his choice to retire may upset fans, considering the more than positive run he's had throughout his career. "I'm sorry that it was all so successful," he stated. "I honestly didn't mean it to happen like that. It's hardly surprising that people grew to hate me."
Despite his lack of producing new songs as of late, the 60-year-old Genesis drummer holds 13 hit singles, seven Grammys and an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1999 for his work on Disney's 'Tarzan.'
While loyal supporters will have to get their Phil Collins fix by relying on his past catalog of tunes, the performer has a somewhat different view of how he's perceived in the music business. "I don't really belong to that world and I don't think anyone's going to miss me," Collins said. "I'm much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely."
This truly is sad news. I can't believe he doesn't feel like he is an absoulte icon in the music industry. I am 40 and I don't remember life without his wonderful songs, so diverse and ever evolving. If anything he has done so much he deserves to go home and rest. Phil thanks for all the good time that was spent enjoying your work. God Bless.
Phil, When my brother was dying many years ago, we put music in his ears for 18 days.......DON'T GIVE UP!! You either,we will miss your unique and amazing music. Be well, stay well, Beth
Phil is far to humble as he will very much be missed. Genesis was in my opinion always under rated. They had the best live shows of any of their generation.
Uh.... something else is afoot. He doesn't 'Have' to drum. Can he not play piano, sing, write or produce any longer? There's obviously another reason. However what ever it be, I haven't listened to any of his music the past 15 years, however the music he has made, it was some Great stuff and will always be a unique part of it's own within music. Good stuff Phil.
Phil Collins is a musical genius. I'm sure he will still be able to contributr to the musical world despite the recent health scare..... I hope. Thanks Phil for all you've done in the past
Phil Collins is so wrong if he thinks he is not an icon in the industry. I will miss him. Now get some pain medication and stop feeling sorry for yourself. Most people never achieve what you have done so chin up.
I hate watching the greatest entertainers get old. I wished I could heal him and bring so many others back. Once this generation is gone, we are left with nothing. I dislike todays music and movies. TV sucks too.
ihe man is an excellent singer,i:m sure he could have any body in the music industry to back him... hope its a laps in judgement the man is is awesome entertainer and singer..
I read an article the other day where he said he was leaving music because so many people hate his solo music and that he had suicidal thoughts. He was just working on another Motown cover album.
Saw Genesis live at Wembley and Phil on his own at Earls Court, Happy times will always remember some poor drunk at Earls Court was almost carried into the concert and promptly feel asleep. It was soooo funny he woke up about ten minutes before the end clapping and cheering then got up and left. Poor Guy missed one of the best gigs. Don't be hard on yourself Phil you have made many people very happy for a very long time. It's probably the right decision and you have earned a rest. Farewell Phil you will be missed.
I am thankful for Phil doing what he has done. I also know what hes going through, as far as the pain goes. Take care of yourself first, then the work after. He have blessed us with his music, and his voice for many years. Phil doesnt give himself near the credit he deserves. He is so very talented in many ways, most singers cant hold a candle to Phil. He will be missed.
This is truly sad...Phil has been one of my favorites for years and years. I absolutely love Genesis and Phil solo! He is phenomenal in concert! Being a drummer/musician all those years will definitely takes its toll on the body.. I will always be a fan and will keep listening and enjoying your music no matter what! Best wishes Phil!

Such sad news. Not just that he'll no longer make music but his declining health as well. Best of luck.
