Suri Cruise, Nearly 5, Will Use a Pacifier as Long as She Wants

The Cruise family is no stranger to controversy when it comes to their trendsetting daughter, Suri. In the past two years, critics have analyzed her love of high heels, quirky dresses and lipstick, and now she's been spotted in Vancouver with a pacifier in her mouth. The problem, of course, is that she's nearly 5, but anyone expecting Tom or Katie to be the ones to yank that binky anytime soon should think again.

"Suri just isn't told 'no' very often," an insider tells me. "Scientology encourages you to make your own decisions and learn lessons as you live your life. She'll know herself when it's time to throw the pacifier away, plain and simple."

Tom is the world's most famous Scientologist, and his wife quickly took to the religion, which has been a part of Suri's life from the moment she was born. When Katie gave birth in April 2006, signs reminding everyone to be silent were posted because it is believed a "silent birth" is the ideal way to enter the world.

"Their religion and beliefs are a huge part of who Tom and Katie are as individuals and parents," a friend of the couple's tells me. "It's not like they would not tell Suri not to touch a fire or run across the street, but certain things, they want her to decide herself, including when she feels it's the right time to stop using a pacifier."

Let's hope the Cruise family dentist doesn't hear about this binky business. Some of the main reasons against pacifiers is that it can impede the proper growth of one's teeth and mouth. According to experts, including the Academy of General Dentistry, prolonged use can even cause changes in the shape of the roof of your mouth.

This does not surprise me, look at who her parents are. And why is she never dressed for the weather? It's like she's Kate's little dress up doll, it's creepy. Let her be a kid. I really hope these two weirdos don't reproduce again.

Oh please, just go to South Central LA and see all the grown crack heads sucking on pacifiers and then talk to me about a 5 year old.

I agree! What parent lets their 5 year old walk around with a pacifier in their mouth? Now I was told any cat can have kittens, it the raising of those kittens that's the biggest responsibility. Now take a good look at the two parents and you can get your answer sometimes about the child. Yes, they never dress her for the weather like I see so often. Sunday it was 57 degrees here, parents walking with jackets and children walking with sleeveless dresses and shorts with sandals and they wonder why the child is sick! Idiots!!!!!

I don't think Katie will have any more kids. How many turkey basters would really appeal to a Hollywood star? I'm surprised she found one. You KNOW Tommy-girl didn't touch her.

It's none of your business what Suri does. If her parents let her suck a binky, so what. Get over yourselves and get a life. I am sure that she is not an abused child. Maybe you should take all of this 'concern' and direct it toward children who need it.

Hey TomKat: part of being a good parent is not to let your child walk around looking like a MORON! Wait until she gets 'teased', then they will say only the enlightenment of Scientology lets those 'know' what is mean spirited. Yes. But isn't that all a myth? Even if a child never uses a pacifier or was breast fed, there is no guarantee the child won't have crooked teeth regardless. Most people are either genetically lucky or have had braces.

Yes but, how are they going to keep her from ridicule of other children. Or will that be what teaches Suri that 5+ with a sucky is just not right? They could always home school her and keep her isolated and odd tho I suppose. These have been her formative years. Good luck to them with what they're creating.

Ridiculous. Just like a child who sucks their thumb constantly, she'll end up with bucked teeth. They need to tell her that if she's old enough for high heels and lipstick (!), then she's too old for a "binky". That's the problem with today's little darlings -- Mommy & Daddy are afraid if they tell them "no", they won't be their BFF's......@@ Grow a pair and set some boundaries and rules, for crying out loud........Can you imagine what she'll be like as a pre-teen/teenager?

I totally agree. who is running that household...a 5 year old? it is called responsible parenting and a five year old need not be using a pacifier. i wonder if she is potty trained? very peculiar, in my opinion.....but Tom and Katie seem to want to "set their own trend" and they certainly have. I hope they have no more children.

Of my five siblings, none of us had a pacifier as an infant/toddler. Thumb sucking was nipped in the bud. We grew up with no braces, straight teeth and great smiles. Some people seem to spoil their children to the point where the child rules the house. It certainly doesn't help the kid when he/she grows older and realizes that he/she is not the center of the universe. (and, in this case, has to wear the best braces money can buy.)

Suri is adorable but a very spoiled little girl. Unfortunately there are a lot of children who suck on those darn pacifiers far too long a time. Had 3 children and none of them had a pacifier. Many parents use them as a crutch to keep the child quiet. Sad....
