Suri Cruise, Nearly 5, Will Use a Pacifier as Long as She Wants

The Cruise family is no stranger to controversy when it comes to their trendsetting daughter, Suri. In the past two years, critics have analyzed her love of high heels, quirky dresses and lipstick, and now she's been spotted in Vancouver with a pacifier in her mouth. The problem, of course, is that she's nearly 5, but anyone expecting Tom or Katie to be the ones to yank that binky anytime soon should think again.

"Suri just isn't told 'no' very often," an insider tells me. "Scientology encourages you to make your own decisions and learn lessons as you live your life. She'll know herself when it's time to throw the pacifier away, plain and simple."

Tom is the world's most famous Scientologist, and his wife quickly took to the religion, which has been a part of Suri's life from the moment she was born. When Katie gave birth in April 2006, signs reminding everyone to be silent were posted because it is believed a "silent birth" is the ideal way to enter the world.

"Their religion and beliefs are a huge part of who Tom and Katie are as individuals and parents," a friend of the couple's tells me. "It's not like they would not tell Suri not to touch a fire or run across the street, but certain things, they want her to decide herself, including when she feels it's the right time to stop using a pacifier."

Let's hope the Cruise family dentist doesn't hear about this binky business. Some of the main reasons against pacifiers is that it can impede the proper growth of one's teeth and mouth. According to experts, including the Academy of General Dentistry, prolonged use can even cause changes in the shape of the roof of your mouth.

Well, its none of our business how long that child sucks her thumb. There is more important things and issues to be concerned about in the world. Her still sucking her thumbs is not a serious thing. Get over it and get a life of your own and maybe then you will stop being so darn concerned about a child still sucking her thumb.

This picture is sad to me. It makes you wonder if she is a very unhappy child. I hardly ever see her smiling in pictures and I have never seen her playing with another child...

Don't understand the logic in letting a 5 year old make her own decisions. Isn't that what her parents are for? The child looks ridiculous with a pacifier at that age. It would be nice to see just one picture of Suri Cruise dressed like a normal kid instead of wearing high end designer clothing everyday. Does she play at all, or just shop with her mother everyday???

Okay...Suri at the age of 5 is still sucking on a pacifier, drinking from a baby's bottle and has not yet been potty trained, and it's all influenced and fueled by Scientology beliefs.(Suri probably thinks it's 'normal' since she's never been told otherwise) S

cientologists believe that children are "little adults" and are capable of making their own decisions regarding their own growth & development, among other things. In other words, they'll instictively know when it's time to give up the bottle, the pacifier, and to start using the toilet.

She may be too old but she is still a lil one. What is more disgusting is when I see grown women sucking their thumbs-it is so unattractive and just gross as hell. Now that needs to stop! So leave Suri alone she is still a little girl and the grown up folks (which are mostly teens and woman in their early 20s that I have seen) still sucking their thumbs take a good look at your ridiculous looking selves in the mirror. Honestly who cares? Every parent has a different parenting style, regardless of religion. Until you are on the inside of the family dynamic you can only speculate what is actually going on. My 2 year old still uses a bottle and a binky. Go ahead form your opinions...now let me explain. My son has a metabolic disorder that requires him to eat and drink every few hours. The only way i can get him to drink overnight is to let him have a bottle. If he doesnt drink overnight his blood sugar drops drastically and he could die. The binky he only uses when he is asleep. Because if he doesnt have it, he grinds his teeth so horribly that he has chipped his front tooth. Now am i a horrible parent? No, i am protecting my child's health as well as doing what is best for him. Some parents let their child cry themselves to sleep. I believe that is just showing if you are upset that we arent there for you. That is my personal belief. And i should not be judged for having such beliefs. Just because this child has famous parents doesnt mean they should be held to higher standards.
