Valerie Bertinelli Tells Ellen of New Hubby: 'I Don't Know Why He Married Me!'

Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but for Valerie Bertinelli, they came as quite a shock!

The Jenny Craig spokeswoman revealed in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres that her proposal from hubby Tom Vitale wasn't all candlelight and roses.

While together in Italy, Bertinelli was frustrated following a "crappy" dinner when Vitale decided to pop the question. "I'm like, 'I just want to read this magazine. It was a crappy dinner. We're in Italy. It should've been an amazing dinner.' I was really pissed off. I just wanted to read my magazine," said the actress. "And then I just closed my eyes, and he just puts this little box on my chest."

In the midst of her excitement, the 'Hot in Cleveland' star couldn't help from letting her sensible side get the best of her when she saw the box.

"It was from Tiffany's ... I said, 'Why did you spend so much money? Why did you go to Tiffany's? You should've gone someplace else with cheaper jewelry.'"

Despite her initial reservations about the pricey bauble, Bertinelli, who was previously married to rocker Eddie Van Halen, accepted Vitale's proposal and the pair tied the knot on Jan. 1, 2011.

"I don't know why he married me," she joked. Bertinelli's reasons for saying "I do," however, were more clear from the start. "He loved me no matter what. In his way, he's teaching me to love myself just as I am," she said.

"I swear to God, if I knew I would feel this good and my life would be this amazing at 50, I would've turned 50 a long time ago. I pinch myself that this is my life right now."

Marsha, that is because all of the negative people out there have such pathetic, puny little lives that the only way they can attempt to build themselves up is by trying to knock everyone else down. It's sad really. Congrats to Val. Hope they have a long and happy life together.

I know exactly how Valerie feels. I was with losers for most of my life. I met my husband 10 years before we got married 'cuz we went our separate ways. (I knew I would just break his heart if we got involved back then.) When we finally did marry, it was the best decision I ever made. For someone to love you even when you are feeling miserable and don't love yourself does a lot for a woman. I let him know everyday how much I love him. I hope Valerie does the same. I'm sure she will after all she's been through.

I guess we still have people who can't accept that sometimes the woman makes more money than the man. Not all men are threatened by a woman with more money. Not all men seek out women for their money. And even though Valerie looks good, she looks natural, not like a 50 year old woman trying to be 30. Did you stop to think that he really loves her, money or no money, looks or no looks??

Because a woman is gay doesn't necessarily mean she hates men; nor the other way around gay men/women. It's my understanding that gay folks can have lots of friends of the opposite sex.

If Ellen hated men, she'd never have any of them on as guests. You apparently need to get out of the house more, or at least tune in to her show once in awhile. I don't think Ellen really hates anyone. Not her nature, with a slogan like "Laugh, dance, love". If your daughter were in a relationship with a woman who loved her and treated her right, would you rather see her happy or wqould you force her into a relationship with some guy who beat the crap out of her just to suit your own agenda? It's her life. Not yours. Grow up for God's sakes.
