Lady Gaga has always been a friend to the gay community, but Malaysia just isn't feeling the love. The conservative, Muslim-majority nation took issue with some of the pro-gay lyrics in Gaga's new hit single, 'Born This Way,' and promptly dropped the censorship ax, according to the AP.
Radio stations in Malaysia have made the decision to censor the track, replacing lyrics like "no matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian, transgendered life" with garbled sounds.
A statement from Malaysia's largest private station, AMP Radio Networks, defended the call, saying, "The particular lyrics in 'Born This Way' may be considered as offensive when viewed against Malaysia's social and religious observances." It continued, "The issue of being gay, lesbian or [bisexual] is still considered as a 'taboo' by general Malaysians" -- as well as the government, which can impose fines on broadcasters for infringing on the ban.
But not all Malaysians share the sentiment. Pang Khee Teik, co-founder of Sexuality Independence, a Malaysian group dedicated to stopping sexual discrimination, was appalled by the decision, saying the media should "not perpetuate ignorance and hate."
"We just want the same thing as everyone else: to love, be loved and have our songs played on the radio," he said.
This isn't the first time an artist has fallen victim to Malaysia's infamous moral decency codes. In 2010, a Muslim group protested openly gay 'American Idol' runner-up Adam Lambert's performance there despite him agreeing to follow the country's performance guidelines.
Lady Gaga dropped 'Born This Way,' the title track off her new album, in February. It immediately rocketed to No. 1 on the charts in several countries and became her longest-running No. 1 single. See the video:
Regarding talent, if you listen to any of her unmixed singing ("Speechless" is one), she really does have a great voice, plus she can play both piano and guitar.
As for the censorship, it's a shame a song that promotes acceptance for everyone - not just gays - is viewed negatively. If they refuse to play the lyrics as intended, they should not play the song at all.
Call it whatever you want. If she has talent....why does she rely on the "weirdo" aspect to sell herself. Madonna also had talent but her voice was nothing above and beyond the ordinary so playing the outcast was the means she chose to showcase herself. Take either one of them back to the days of radio and neither could sell a note on their own merit.
She doesn't always do theatrics. And you don't SEE the theatrics when you listen to the music on your MP3. We fans recognize her for her talent. She just puts on a show when you see her live, so that way you're not paying money to see someone stand and sing for 3-4 hours.
"She just puts on a show when you see her live, so that way you're not paying money to see someone stand and sing for 3-4 hours."
Trust me....I won't be listening to her on my ipad and I won't be paying to watch her climb out of a plastic egg. If you want to hear talent without the gimmicks, check Tommy Emmannuel on you tube and do a search for "guitar at its most beautiful". Here's a man that can play the melody, harmony, base and throw in a little percussion with no gimmicks included....and he does it all at the same time with no effort. This is what I call talent. Not some bimbo blonde being carted onstage in a plastic shell.

There are a million people out there with that much talent but she stands out only because of her actions and appearance....no other reason. The more outrageous you act...the more songs you sell. If you like it....buy it but don't even attempt to sell it to me.
Not true. David Bowie stopped the theatrics long ago and is still sucessful. Singers like Jewel did well with just their voice with no theatrics. Lady Gaga would do just fine without theatrics. Yes, I know that she didn't do theatrics when she was signed with another label. Shs was not successful, but it wasn't because of the lack of theatrics, it was because the people who tried to promote her weren't good at what they were doing.
I might like the song more if it wasn't a rip off of Madonna's "Vogue", and the video sucks. No, actually, I can't stand this song. I'm over her and her 'schtick'. Sorry, if she had real talent she wouldn't need the shocking gimmicks.
Actually, it's a rip off of Madonna's Express Yourself.
The thing about Lady Gaga is that she IS indeed doing performance art -- which, FTR, I value -- but there is nothing new about what she's doing. She's imitating Madonna, lock, stock, reinventions and musical notes. So while I do enjoy what she does, I'm not deluding myself into thinking there is anything new about her.
Whatever. The song title is irrelevant. She is immitating Madonna to the point of stealing. She's not talented. Performance art doesn't masquerade itself as anything other than what it is. She may be doing performance art, but she's calling herself a singer and she isn't. At least, not a good one. If she had any real talent as a singer, she wouldn't need to steal everything she does from someone who is more famous and - as much as it pains me to say so - more talented than she is. If she was a good singer, she wouldn't need to distract us with weird costumes and bizarre behavior. Her videos are gross (pulling heads out of her vag? Really?) and her "music" is VERY been there/done that. Except that it was done better the first time around.
Thank you ma'am! You only need the "show" if you can't stand out from the pack any other way. Even the name is a gimmick. People like Springsteen, Bowie, Knopfler, Clapton and even as far back as Patsy Kline...made it on talent and talent alone.

David Bowie had talent. He didn't need the gimmicks. You're making excuses for the bimbo when she bombed without the shlock. If she were good at what she does...the promoters wouldn't have made a difference. She only succeeds because of the gimmicks and people like you are willing to buy her "no talent" crap.
It's sad. Throw some flashing lights and crazy costumes at people and they think you're 'talented'. This chick actually had the nerve a few years ago, to accuse Christina Aguillera of "immitating" her! What the hell is she smoking? She doesn't have 1/10th the talent that C.A. has! It's a shame that Christina seems to be going through a bit of a meltdown right now, because she has a beautiful voice and she truly is talented. Not like this Circus Sideshow.
Most of American Culture is trashy,so one has to just select the parts you want to adhere to.Malayasia and other countries do just that, ban our sinful ways of life.
Thank goodness Chevy and Lori are here to determine what constitutes good music and talent for us all. Without their keen insight and deep interpretations of the greats like Christina Aguillera I might have felt lost, musically speaking. Chevy opened my eyes to the fact that Bowie's androgynous Ziggy Stardust alterego is, in fact, NOT a gimmick; and Lori brought to my attention the lyrical genius behind "Candyman." I can't thank these two enough for the effect they've had on my musical tastes. No longer will I ever let myself enjoy a performance based on "flashing lights," or let myself just go with the beat. Again, thank you Chevy and Lori, thank you.

Another piece of crap that relies on shock value to replace talent.

You say shock value, I say performance art.

In Kentucky they block out the part "don't be a drag just be a queen" why even play it if you're going to censor it??

Christina is another talent. "Candyman" is among my top 10 favorites.
