Renee Zellweger 'Wanted a Ring' from Bradley Cooper Before Split

Bradley Cooper and Renee Zellweger have broken up, leaving family, friends and fans to ask ... what went wrong?

"They were such a great couple that we are all shocked," a friend of Renee's tells me. "We all thought for sure they were going to be together forever after they moved in together last fall -- we're really sad."

My source says Renee even skipped the Golden Globes in January to be with Bradley when his father died. "But after that she wanted a ring, and he just wasn't ready to propose," the friend tells me.

Bradley, who at 36 is five years younger than Renee, split from wife Jennifer Esposito back in 2007 after only four months of marriage. Renee divorced husband Kenny Chesney in 2005, citing "fraud."

"There is no doubt both of these people have not had a great experience being married -- however, Renee was ready to give it another try with Bradley," a friend of the couple's tells me. "She's 41 and has an Oscar. She's starting to think about children and settling down while Bradley loves his life exactly as it is. It's taken him a long time to be an A-list actor, and he's enjoying all the perks, fame and opportunities that have come his way following 'The Hangover.'"

But is there any hope left for the couple?

"They are both in very different places in their lives and unfortunately just grew apart."

You are telling it exactly like it is. Watching him thoroughly enjoying his status on Inside the Actor's Studio while Renee was in the audience then came his statement about not being ready to be engaged on the Howard Stern show. Renee got the message, loud and clear.

The guy has a pretty face and that's it!

Never heard of him before he started dating Renee Zellweger. From where I sit, this guy was just using her to get on the "A-List" in furtherence of his career.

He'll propose to Renee when his career flops and he needs some PR to get some work.

CHESNEY was on her "success" level and that where she should seek other mates.

It's very hard to marry and settle down with two egos at risk! Hollywood marraiges almost never last for more than a couple of years! There's alot of sacrafices to be made when having a career in Hollywood and marraige especially when having children. This is no surprise to any of us. If they want to get married find someone who isn't in the limelight all the time.

These 2 were always in Philly at some point or another as Bradley's family lives here. They always stayed at the aka Hotel in Rittenhouse Square. He was funny, warm. Renee (who I've always liked,) was cold, unattractive (skeleton thin) and stuck up. He can do better.

Cooper has been around for a long time and only get up on the big screen level as a leading man because he's(was) dating Renee. He can never measure up to all those current A-lister leading men like Liam Neeson, Robert Denero, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, etc. I guess now he thinks he's all that, how pathetic!
