'Barefoot' Backfire: Make-a-Wish Kid Turns Ina Down

It's the PR disaster heard 'round the world. The tables have turned on Food Network star Ina Garten, the 'Barefoot Contessa,' who got caught red-handed last week turning down a Make-a-Wish kid. On Monday, she called the family of Enzo Pereda, a 6-year-old cancer patient, to say she had reconsidered, but now
TMZ is reporting they turned her down.
"This has been a disaster for Ina," a foodie insider tells me. "She buried her head in the sand for days hoping the bad publicity would go over, but it didn't."
To a casual observer -- as well as the scores of new ex-fans -- Ina's change of heart on Monday appeared to be possibly driven more by the desire to nip a festering scandal in the bud, rather than to make a sick little boy's dream come true.
"She was worried her initial reaction was hurting her business," my source contends.
Ina had twice blew off meeting Enzo after the wonderful Make-A-Wish Foundation approached her before being shamed into finally contacting his family, independently of the foundation.
"Chefs think they are the new rock stars. And no one has a higher opinion of themselves than Ina," an insider tells me. "She forgot a long time ago that it is the fans who make you who you are. You can be the most talented chef in the world, but if people don't like you, they won't watch your shows or buy your cookbooks."
Ultimately, Enzo's family decided to put an end to the madness and move on from Ina. "I don't want to put my son through all these emotions. We're better off just leaving everything the way it is," dad Adrian told TMZ.
It's great to see that the Pereda family holds no bad feelings and is already getting excited to have Enzo's other wish come true ... to swim with dolphins.

Wow you are cold. She turned this kid down for over two years because she was too busy with her book tour, etc. This clearly shows what kind of person she is. The truth is she couldn't take a couple of hours over a two year period to do something nice for a sick child. Sorry, but I think she is a very selfish woman and you reap what you sow. I personally can't watch her show any longer now that I know she is not a very nice person and I think a lot of people are going to feel the same way.
Wow Tim, how dare you see another perspective to this situation. It's amazing to me the ire that reading a half-true gossip article can raise in people. I read the blog on Enzo's parents' site and they were appalled that this story was ever released to the public. Not one of us knows the real reason behind why Ms. Garten initially turned down this request OR if she even knew about it prior to the uproar in response to someone leaking it to the press. Nor do we know why she offered to meet with him. Sadly, we'll never know because the truth doesn't lie in the details here. Because there are NO details here.
BTW, the family of Enzo are upset that all of you Ina Garten haters continuously refer to their son as dying or terminal. Cut it out - you're not helping anyone with your anger.
Ina is full of herself! I watch many food network shows and I got tired of her early on. She seemed to be too phony.
Jerk!
Tim, she not only refused a dying boys request to mmet her, twice. She turned down Jennifer Garner, a huge Barefoot Contessa fan, who was turned down by Ina Garten when she requested to appear on the show: "I tried to get on Ina's show… but eventually she just said, ‘I'm sorry, I only use my real friends on the show.' I felt like, ‘What are you saying? That we're not friends? I know everything about you!'" So much for fans.
Yea Tim!
She did what she had to do! #1 Get off her high horse
#2 Ask for Julia's forgiveness because is she was alive she would be all over her.
i agree with you Tim. so many people on here all high and mighty as if they have all the answers. look, people, i understand your anger at this woman but there may be something more to her reasoning for why she wouldn't meet with him. reasons she may not want to divulge to any of you. she is a celebrity and she wouldn't be where she was if she couldn't cook. that doesn't mean she owes the public for anything more than that. would i ask my physician to do my taxes? get real people and get over yourselves.
I can not believe that you can condone how she treated this child. How can anyone tell a six old boy who has cancer-NO. He's six years old, she should have been honored. ( I'm sure his parents have spent money on her cookbooks). She's gotten money out of them one way or another, I'm sure. He didn't want to meet someone you would normally think a six year old boy would want to meet. No, he wanted to meet her ,Ina Garten, a Chef, imagine that. It wouldn't have hurt her to have meet this child and spent time with him. I think it would have been nice for her to have him the on show; maybe they could have made cookies
together or something. If anything; if it has to be all about her, it probably would have made her more popular with her fans. But then of course I guess she'll always have people like you. That will always keep making her richer no matter what she does. I just know I'll never watch her show again.
Give me a break, this woman isn't Oprah... She has the time.
I have a feeling that's exactly where Ina's going to be...alone.
You belong where is lives The BOTTOM DWELLER Hope you get killed by a bus tomorrow LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL WHITE TRASH
Perfectly said tim...I agree with you.
Eat the RICH !!!!...all those Hamptons' people, AND CEO's should be on a table...stuffed....I pray the boy recovers...Swim with the dolphin's Hon,and ENJOY!!!!
I agree. I still say the mom was behind all this. She is the one who wanted to meet Ina....the child could ask for anything and he chose Ina?? I admire Ina and love her cooking and show....but as a former child myself, I can think of lots of other "wishes" to ask for that are more child related.
Tim - she didn't do what she HAD to do, she did what she WANTED to do, and that was to think of herself instead of taking 10 minutes out of her precious life to honor the wish or a dying child. It simply doesn't get much colder and more selfish than that. Yes, she has the right to be cold and selfish and unfeeling if she wants to, but her public has the right to react to it as they see fit.
"She did what she HAD to do?" Huh?
15 minutes are up.Thank you have a nice life a hole.

Ditto! Tim did you not see when she turned down a well know actress because according to her she only cooks with her own friends and has never had anyone else in her kitchen. We have all seen her friends. For the most part all she is ..is a cook for all her rich and gay friends...which is the only reason the are around.
