'Barefoot' Backfire: Make-a-Wish Kid Turns Ina Down

It's the PR disaster heard 'round the world. The tables have turned on Food Network star Ina Garten, the 'Barefoot Contessa,' who got caught red-handed last week turning down a Make-a-Wish kid. On Monday, she called the family of Enzo Pereda, a 6-year-old cancer patient, to say she had reconsidered, but now
TMZ is reporting they turned her down.
"This has been a disaster for Ina," a foodie insider tells me. "She buried her head in the sand for days hoping the bad publicity would go over, but it didn't."
To a casual observer -- as well as the scores of new ex-fans -- Ina's change of heart on Monday appeared to be possibly driven more by the desire to nip a festering scandal in the bud, rather than to make a sick little boy's dream come true.
"She was worried her initial reaction was hurting her business," my source contends.
Ina had twice blew off meeting Enzo after the wonderful Make-A-Wish Foundation approached her before being shamed into finally contacting his family, independently of the foundation.
"Chefs think they are the new rock stars. And no one has a higher opinion of themselves than Ina," an insider tells me. "She forgot a long time ago that it is the fans who make you who you are. You can be the most talented chef in the world, but if people don't like you, they won't watch your shows or buy your cookbooks."
Ultimately, Enzo's family decided to put an end to the madness and move on from Ina. "I don't want to put my son through all these emotions. We're better off just leaving everything the way it is," dad Adrian told TMZ.
It's great to see that the Pereda family holds no bad feelings and is already getting excited to have Enzo's other wish come true ... to swim with dolphins.

AMEN. So glad that he turned her down. I've already turned her OFF.
Truly glad that this story's ending the way it should. I was so shocked when I read the first story that I cried. I've had a terminally ill child, and that turn-down was one of the most inconceivable things I'd heard about in a very long time. Good for Enzo and his family, taking the high road and moving on.
Wait a second, I am just reading about this now. Let me see if i have this correct. The boy made a request through Make-A-Wish to visit Ina and she just refused? I really cant believe that. I am a big fan but wow I dont know what to think... there has to be some other factor involved here. Was it a scheduling thing? I am having a hard time believing she would actual turn this boy down.
I'm glad he did too!! I don't think she can COOK either!! Chicken soup and matzo balls, maybe.
Much of the criticism of Ms. Garten misses the mark. A lot of people are criticizing her for being a rich, (formerly) popular celebrity who turned down a child's request. In actuality we should ALL do everything we can to help those less fortunate, no matter how much money we have or don't have, whether we are celebrities or not. It's easy to say so-and-so should do something for whatever reason, but the fact is we can all do things to help others.
The boy is going to swim with dolphins! Much better than to visit a whale on a set.
Good for them! I am so glad that they turned her down. I have already gotten rid of all of her cook books. Won't watch again and certainly won't buy anything of hers again!
As a Retired Executive Chef, I am appalled at this woman who turned down a small boy who requested that his wish was to meet her. There are some wonderful and talented Chef's in this world and we are starting to see what they have to offer due to the new interest in food. This person should be band from any show's in the future, If she belone's to ANY Chef's club, they should kick her out or fine her a lot. She has given the food service field a black eye. Shame shame on her. To the the little boy and his family,I offer aapolagee's to them and would like to add. Almost of us Chef's are really good people.
PAULSTARNYC... Ina turned the boy down TWICE because she didn't want to be bothered. It had nothing to do with her schedule or any other business factor, only her self-centered ego. She is a very selfish woman with a cold, dark heart. She couldn't care less about her fans and she thinks they are a bore and a bother. The only time she acknowledges them is when they have cold hard cash in their hands.
I'm glad they said No! also.
Of all the celebs around, I would've never guessed that Ina, lovely soft-spoken Ina...my hero, would turn down a sick child.
I'm so sad because I'll never look at her the same again...I'll never feel the way I did before.
Perhaps idealizing someone you don't know is not such a great idea. I've learned my lesson.
I agree 100%. I was a huge fan of her show "Barefoot Contesa" but her actions were so shameful that I will never watch it again. Also she must not have any children of her own because no mother would have done what she has did.
Ina, I'm still a huge fan of yours!
You can make your own decisions regarding who gets to cook with you. Don't let the public pressure you into something you don't want to do.
Plus, you already have all of the money you need and your show is doing great on TVFood Network.
Life is good in the Hamptons!
I always believed Ina thought a little too much of herself, but I never realized she is such an insensitive bore. She could care less about the little boy. The only reason she gave in, after turning him down twice before, is she was concerned that the bad publicity would end up costing her money. She can count me as an ex-viewer.
Enzo is better off with the dolphins! To snub a sick or dying childs ultimate wish is BAD KARMA. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME Ina... Ill never watch your show!!!!! Choke on your snubby food Garten!!! The food network needs to DUMP INA!!!
Who the heck does Ina think she is, a supper star? I use to be abig fan of Inas. I will never watch her show again, Shame on you Ina.
Amen....and amen again!!!
I wonder if she gets too many requests from sick kids. That could explain it.
So Ina had declined the child the opportunity to meet her, I say no big deal! Has anyone ever thought that perhaps Ina had a lot of things going on in her life and did not want to be bothered, why does she have to do what ever this child she has never met wants, just because he has cancer does not mean she is obligated to meet with him. I am not defending her, I am pointing out that people are so quick to judge. Another thing, shame on all of you who no longer watch her show because of this incident, you watched her show before because of her talent and perhaps inspiration to future culinary artists, stay out of celebrities personal lives and you will all be much more happy with your own. If you pointed out the flaws of every celebrity, almost none of them would be liked, you are no better than them and they are no better than you!
What an ungreatful wench...hope she goes straight to the bottom...
