Demi Lovato Leaving 'Sonny With a Chance' to Focus on Singing Career

Teen starlet Demi Lovato is leaving her hit Disney Channel show, 'Sonny with a Chance,' to focus on her music career. "I don't think going back to 'Sonny' would be healthy for my recovery," Lovato tells PEOPLE. "Being in front of a camera would make me nervous."

Late last year, Lovato entered a rehabilitation facility for "physical and emotional issues" related to an eating disorder. When the 18-year-old singer-actress entered treatment, 'Sonny With a Chance' was placed on hiatus. Lovato was on tour with the Jonas Brothers when she decided to get help and was forced to withdraw from the tour.

"We respect Demi's decision to focus full time on her music and not immediately return to her acting career," the Disney Channel said in a statement. "She is a talented young woman, and our hearts are with her as she continues to take action to improve her health and bounce back from adversity."

"It made sense for me to go ahead and leave the show to focus on my music," Lovato tells PEOPLE in this week's issue. "It's kind of sad for me that a chapter of my life has ended, but there couldn't be a better time for me to move on."

Lovato will continue to record under Disney's record label, Hollywood Records.

In a candid interview with Seventeen, Lovato revealed that even after seeking treatment she doesn't "think there's going to be a day when I don't think about food or my body. ... I will deal with it for the rest of my life because it's a life-long disease."

The actress also advised young girls to get help if they ever begin to feel bad about their bodies or consider harming themselves in any way. "It's very crucial that you get your feelings out – but don't ever inflict harm on your own body because your body is so sacred," Lovato said. "If you are going through that dark period, go to your family and closest friends. Don't put yourself in danger."

One thing I'm very glad of is that Demi Lovato is trying to figure out what's good for Demi. I know a lot of people will say that sounds selfish but I feel it's important for a person to take control of themselves so they know & learn abotu what makes them tick. I think leaving her hit Disney Channel show, 'Sonny with a Chance,' to focus on her music career. I think it's a baby step towards how badly she wants to be a healthy and happy person.
