LeAnn Rimes on Her Affair: I Know Why I Did It

It was just over two years ago that LeAnn Rimes was caught cheating on then-husband Dean Sheremet with her 'Northern Lights' co-star Eddie Cibrian. And after weathering the storm that followed, Rimes admits she learned a lot.

"I know I didn't do it the right way," Rimes says in "Backstory: LeAnn Rimes," a new special airing Sunday on the Great American Country channel [via UsMagazine.com.] "I didn't have the tools to know how to do it the right way, how to let go the right way. I'd never been taught that," she confesses.

The 28-year-old continues: "I have the strength [now] but I didn't at the time... So, it got really messy, but I have learned a lot from that. And I'm not glad it happened, but I know why it did."

And though Rimes said she learned from her mistakes, she does think there is a double standard when it comes to men and women cheating. "[Country music] has such a double standard. You know, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash and all these guys. God knows what they did back in the day? And if a woman did it, you never were accepted or forgiven. But if it was a guy, it was just their life... It's quite interesting to have to navigate those waters as a woman in this business."

Cibrian, 37, and Rimes got engaged earlier this year but haven't yet announced a wedding date.

I think there's a double standard for one reason, because I think women need to stand up for other women. I think that's how a lot of women feel and that's why we blame the women more than the man. I think because as women we know how bad it hurts when your guy cheats and how could we do that to another woman?

that double-standard angle is inaccurate. oftentimes when a man cheats, you hear, "Oh, his poor wife. what a dirty cheating dog he is. how could he??" and often when a woman cheats you hear "oh, i gues he just wasn't keeping her happy at home, waasn't paying enough attention to her...bla bla bla"

LeeAnn Rimes didn't know how not to cheat on her husband? She didn't have the "tools"? No one taught her? Give me a break! Since when do you have to be taught how to be faithful? I don't care what your examples are, there is no excuse good enough for cheating on your spouse. NONE! LeeAnn can use all the excuses she wants, she will always be a liar and a cheat.

None of you understand what she meant by "tools". I am not a fan of hers, nor do I condone what she did but by "tools", she meant how to deal with the bad situation that was happening to her. If your spouse who you love doesn't touch you at all for 2 years and you beg them to seek counceling with you and they refuse and you are neglected and alone, you get out of the marriage instead of cheating. She is saying that she wasn't strong enough to do that and didn't know how to handle the bad situation that was happening to her BEFORE she cheated. Just clarifying...

i disagree about the double-standard angle she is working. it goes both ways....often when a man cheats you hear,"oh his poor wife, he's just a disgusting dog..." but when the woman cheats, you often hear "gee, i guess he just wasn't making her happy at home; i guess he wasn't paying enough attention to her"

Leanne didn't know how to do it the right way? Is there a right way to cheat and break up a home? Actually 2 homes? I am sick of hearing about her and Eddie. Can she just go away. Maybe Eddie knows the right way to cheat and will do it right when he cheats on her.
