Rachel Maddow: Gay People Have a Responsibility to Come Out

Rachel Maddow was quoted in an interview saying that gay people have a responsibility to come out.

Political reporter Maddow, who is openly gay, was being interviewed by The Guardian when she was asked if she felt any frustration towards an equally well-known news presenter who is widely assumed to be gay but has never come out?

Maddow carefully words her response, "I'm sure other people in the business have considered reasons why they're doing what they're doing, but I do think that if you're gay you have a responsibility to come out."

RadarOnline.com is reporting that it was immediately speculated that Maddow was referring to CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.

However, 38-year-old Maddow took to her blog to say that it was not Cooper she was referring to.

Maddow writes, "I wasn't asked about Anderson Cooper, I didn't say anything about him, he literally was never discussed during the interview at all -- even implicitly. I don't tend to be shy when I criticize -- you wouldn't have to read between the lines if that's what I was trying to do."

She continues, "I did not in my interview with The Guardian say anything about or to Mr. Cooper, nor would I. Although criticism of Mr. Cooper was intimated by The Guardian and picked up everywhere -- I did not make that criticism in the interview, nor did I imply it, nor is it what I believe."

Maddow also wrote about her long held beliefs of people coming out and concludes by saying, "I also believe that coming out makes for a happier life, but that's not a matter of ethics, that's just corny advice."

Maddow is in a long term relationship with her partner, artist Susan Mikula.

Hate to burst your "bubble," Bubbles, but it's not all about running up and down the street waving your arms and declaring your sexuality. It's the little things that many people take for granted, like putting out a picture of you and your parter at the office, saying "we" instead of "me" without fear of wondering if they'll ask who "we" is, getting a king bed at a hotel and not being told double beds are available, etc. Grow up.

I think you mean "the world could NOT care less." For the world to "care less" about something, they must first care about it somewhat.

That said, if no one cares, then why such a fuss about gay marriage? gay adoption? gays in the military? Why such a problem with gays on Glee? Why such a problem with Lady Gaga supporting gays? Why an annual edition of every gossip rag about "who's gay and who's not"? Obviously, the world cares. A lot.

How dare you lump gays into another group (Pedos) that clearly has nothing to do with the subject. Here's some advice;

1. Learn to spell.
2. Gays are attracted to the same sex not underage children.
3. My mother knows how I feel she is the one who instilled tolerance of other people in me.
4. Have the courage to use your real name if you are going to be a biggot.

Additionally, the majority of pedophiles are grown men that like little girls. So by that idiot's logic, straight men are pedophiles.

Uhhh...NO. Just....No. While I'm liberal and I love R.M. to death, it is simply horse**** to declare that anyone has an obligation to shape or reveal their personal lives for anyone else. Why can't liberals understand this? Every gay person's life is not an episode of Glee, and the fact that someone is gay or lesbian is not the most important thing about them!

Those who say "Why do gays need to announce it" make me sick. Straights announce it all day. All you have to do is say "This is my husband / wife." right there you tell everyone you are straight. why do you need to do this? Why cant you just say "This is my friend."? why do we need to know this is who you have sex with? And I say this as a straight father of a gay son. I have had co- workers, neigbors and most of all family members get upset when my son would say he was gay. Get overit.
