'Harry Potter' Viral Stars Release New Hit 'Starship' Musical

"Accio space bugs!" Just two years after first finding fame as a YouTube sensation with their A Very Potter Musical spoof to the world of Harry Potter, Chicago-based Starkid Productions launched their newest original musical, Starship, this weekend.

The troupe celebrated with simultaneous screenings in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, selling out a total of 7 shows across the country. The musical, which ran in February in Chicago, also debuted on YouTube Saturday night and racked up over 150,000 views by Monday morning, while the cast recording broke into the top 10 albums on iTunes this weekend, sitting at number 4 and outranking another album by Starkid's most famous member, Darren Criss, who is currently playing Blaine Anderson on 'Glee.' Criss, who played Harry Potter in the group's original breakout production along with being the group's main musical composer, is also on the charts for his 'Glee: The Music Presents the Warblers' compilation album.

At Sunday's final New York screening, the audience -- comprised mostly of girls under the age of 16 in Starkid regalia and homemade Dark Marks -- shouted questions at the Starkid production members in attendance ranging from asking about inside jokes to requesting their presence at Sweet 16 parties and Bar Mitzvahs. The screening was prefaced with a video message from Criss, eliciting screams from the audience. The production values have increased on this newest Starkid endeavor, and the story of a space bug longing to be a human Starship Ranger is the group's first public turn at an original story after their two Harry Potter productions. The show is a mix of puppetry, live action and video segments that translates well from the stage to a YouTube environment, scored by original songs by Criss that might go on to rival some of his Potter tunes in popularity.

i love you starkid!!!! i stayed up until four in the morning when starship premiered this weekend, and i am in LOVE with it!!! the songs are amazing and the actors and actresses are totally awesome!!!!!!!! :D I LOVE YOU STARKID :D

youre obviously not a starkid, idiota. this is one of the most amazing things ive ever seen, everything is top quality. its hilarious, and the scripts and lyrics are phenominal. this is the opposite of a 'waste of time and effort'.

Awesome article and awesome show! Starkid seriously ROCKED with Starship! As a HP fan, AVPM will always be first, but this is such a crazy second. Everything about the show was such a high quality. The setting, the props, costumes, acting, lighting, music, makeup, (forgive me if I'm forgetting anything) all of it! Starkid, you guys should be so proud of what you've created. It's a fantastic job well done!
