Stevie Nicks Says 'Stupid' Doctor 'Ruined My Life for Eight Years'

Fleetwood Mac icon Stevie Nicks regrets taking medication to help her drug addiction because it "ruined" a large chunk of her life.
The singer, 62, who battled substance abuse in the 1980s, entered the Betty Ford Clinic in 1986 to overcome an addiction to cocaine. That same year a psychiatrist prescribed her Klonopin which is usually for seizures and panic disorders. The results were almost fatal.
"That ruined my life for eight years," she told
FOX411's Pop Tarts. "That was just a stupid doctor making a groupie mistake and just wanting me to come in there, tell him about all my music friends and young Hollywood, and that nearly ruined my life and nearly killed me."
Nicks laments the loss of eight years of her life.
"God knows, maybe I would have met someone, maybe I would have had a baby," she said. "That was my prime eight years. That was a big mistake. Everything else was exactly how it should have been."
Nicks, who has a new album out called 'In Your Dreams' had a surprising dinner guest while she was recording her first studio album since 2001: Reese Witherspoon. The two met when Nicks sat next to Witherspoon's mother on a flight to Nashville -- "she's darling" -- and invited her and her husband to watch her record.
The actress, who won an Oscar for portraying a singer, June Carter Cash, even came up with a name for one of the tracks on Nicks' new album: 'Cheaper Than Free.'

What is it with people always wanting to blame someone else instead of owning up to their own mistakes. STEVIE ruined her own life by using cocaine in the first place. If not for her own bad behavior she would not have had to go to rehab in the first place and been prescribed Klonopin. That being said, I wish her the best.

WOW you must be a saint! Do you sit in judgment of everyone? It must be amazing to be you. People put their faith in doctors tat are trained to help you get better so you take what the doctor gives you.
Not a saint by far and I don't stand in judgement of other people...but I don't blame other people for my own mistakes. If not for her cocaine use she would not have been relying on a doctor for help. Doctors aren't saints either and can only do so much, the rest is up to the patient. I've taken Klonopin in the past for anxiety, and when I saw it wasn't helping I quit taking it...not staying on it for eight years. I'm just sick of everyone always wanting to blame others. Did all those years of taking cocaine not ruin her life??
...bah ha ha Jackie, I get it, you're a f'n wack-a-do. bah ha ha
MY GOD. SHE HAS AGED TERRIBLY, YUUUUCK !!!
I tenf yo agree, and it seems that a lot of the rock icon women have experienced much the same. Perhaps a lot of the men as well, and we can just look around and see hordes of people who have too.
Actually she is right. That was a stupid mistake that the doctor made, giving her that particular drug. But doctors these days are pretty stupid anyway. Not like they used to be.
I understand what you mean Jackie. No one is accountable anymore. No one can stand up and accept the fact that they made bad choices and have to pay for it. Always someone else's fault.
There's a whole generation + of whiners and crybabies and it's getting worse.
Join the club Steve. Jump on the regret bandwagon with me. Hindsight is 20/20. I had a chance to do cocaine and I refused. Hey, won't you play, another, somebody done somebody wrong song!!
Stuff happens but she was trying to get better. You don't seem to find that a worthy endeavor. Glad life has been so good to you.
each one of us is.......
who we are.....
where we and .......
and with what we have............due to the decisions and actions of the collection of days of our lives.
we are responsible for how we REACT to each event in our lives. We place the emphasis on them ( good or bad) and then live out that mantra for life.
Stupid doctor, maybe. More so, stupid girl for doing cocaine in the first place. I have always been a fan Stevie, but own it. You only have yourself to blame.
Very true thats why she has a hole on the side of her nose. From all that blow.
I'm with Jackie....
Well said Jackie. Doctors are not gods who can make sure any and all medications are right for you. Besides had Ms. Nicks never used cocaine she would not have spent losing all those years. And I speak from experience. I was a cocaine user for about 1 year and decided I wanted to live. I quit cold turkey and it was hell but I never looked back nor did i blame any one for my stupidity. No I am no saint. And I endured a hell of alot for 2 years going through withdrawl. But I have remained clean for 25 years now. Ms. Nicks has no one to blame but herself. It is all a matter to taking on the responsibility for our choices in life.
The heading of this article should have been..."You can't have it all".

not to mention she didnt say HOW it ruined her life. Ruined in what way?? Klonopin helps with aniety attacks as well as other things so why doesnt she just explain how she thinks it ruined things for her????
Lily- It ruined her life by causing her to gain over 30 lbs. She said this on Entertainment Tonight several years ago. Many prescription drugs to this which often results in depression for the patient. And I agree with her totally, there was no reason to take that drug year after year. As she put it, 'The light went out of my eyes and the dr just watched and did nothing.'
