Stevie Nicks Says 'Stupid' Doctor 'Ruined My Life for Eight Years'

Fleetwood Mac icon Stevie Nicks regrets taking medication to help her drug addiction because it "ruined" a large chunk of her life.
The singer, 62, who battled substance abuse in the 1980s, entered the Betty Ford Clinic in 1986 to overcome an addiction to cocaine. That same year a psychiatrist prescribed her Klonopin which is usually for seizures and panic disorders. The results were almost fatal.
"That ruined my life for eight years," she told
FOX411's Pop Tarts. "That was just a stupid doctor making a groupie mistake and just wanting me to come in there, tell him about all my music friends and young Hollywood, and that nearly ruined my life and nearly killed me."
Nicks laments the loss of eight years of her life.
"God knows, maybe I would have met someone, maybe I would have had a baby," she said. "That was my prime eight years. That was a big mistake. Everything else was exactly how it should have been."
Nicks, who has a new album out called 'In Your Dreams' had a surprising dinner guest while she was recording her first studio album since 2001: Reese Witherspoon. The two met when Nicks sat next to Witherspoon's mother on a flight to Nashville -- "she's darling" -- and invited her and her husband to watch her record.
The actress, who won an Oscar for portraying a singer, June Carter Cash, even came up with a name for one of the tracks on Nicks' new album: 'Cheaper Than Free.'

Sorry, Stevie, but unless they locked you up against your will, they didn't ruin your life. You did. It may have been bad advice, poor treatment, but you had more than enough power to walk away whenever you wanted to. It may be a sad fact, but we all have to take responsibility for our own lives.

Some people will simply never own up to their own bad behavior. They want to place blame on somebody else because they can't tolerate having to take personal responsibility for their own lives. Stevie, you're old enough to know better than to blame your failures in life on a doctor who was trying to help you. If not for that doctor, you'd probably be dead from the cocaine. But hey, if it makes you feel better, keep living in your delusions, I guess. Life won't get any better for you than it's ever been.

I am not getting this now, because i read earlier she had said she was married to her music and gave up having children by choice, love ya Stevie but first you blame Fleetwood Mac for the late seventies and no children, own up to your addictions Stevie!

Oh please Stevie Nicks get down off your high horse. It was not Klonopin that ruined your life. YOU DID with you use of cocaine period. Why is it all you pathetic loser junkies blame evrything under the sun for your self destruction instead of stepping up to the plate and saying I did it to myself I screwed up nobody forced me to use the drugs I did it myself.
I take Klonopin to control muscle seizures from nerve damage and guess what? You don't get high you dont get all numbed out and you sure as hell don't lose control of yourself. Cocaine does that not Klonopin.

Oh Please. Stevie you ruined your own life taking that first taste. You sound like every other junkie I busted.

I'm guessing Stevie certainly didn't say "no" to the Klonopin (probably used her celebrity to demand "something to get me by"). And then blames the "stupid doctor" (as if she has any clue how to practice medicine). I work with addicts and it never ceases to amaze me how readily so many of them blame someone else for their problems. Suck it up, Stevie....nobody but you chose to start doing coke and nobody but you can choose to stop doing it. There are lots of people out there to help you, but ultimately "it's on you".

Stevie: I take klonopin for anxiety and depression. I just have to battle to not take more than is prescribed. I don't know her reasons for taking the drug? All I know is doctor's diagnosis is often wrong. Then when you take medication for "you're condition" you're called a drug addict. We just can't win. Anyway. good luck to you stevie but don't blame the doctors. We all have to keep track of our feelings and thoughts.

Don't care for her monotone "howl" singing anyway. Benzodiazipine drugs are addictive so why didn't she try to get off them herself ? I did after 30+ years...it takes something called WILL POWER ! Don't blame everyone else.........

Ok, the last sentence was a little mean, I apologize.
Another adult, blamming everything, and everyone for her addictions. It gets to me to hear a adult talk like this, it sounds like something a 12 year old would say.
While very ill, and in the hospital way too much for 5 years, the doctors had me on a bunch of different drugs.
I was still sick, so why take all of these medicines I thought, and threw them all down. I was even more ill than before then, and didnt sleep for three weeks after.
Just because a person in a white coat tells you to take something, its a choice, no one has to take anything they dont want to take.
Beware of people in white coats, they are not on your side.
I thought stevie was smarter than this..

If she wants to be doing something/needed, she could help those/children less fortunate, instead of this self-pity party? Hmmm just a thought, or is she able to get beyond 'herself'...

Does that mean she was okay with doing Coke and keeping the drug cartel in business? She probably wasted 10 to 15 years of prime time of her life snorting this crap up her nose.

Stevie Nicks seems to blame everyone except Stevie Nicks. I have taken Klonopin in the past for panic attacks. Because it is addictive most Doctors monitor it closely and don't usually allow you to remain on it for more than 6 months. So I'm pretty sure she wasn't on that for 8 yrs. At some point people have to take responsibility for their own actions and not blame everyone else.

always blame the doctor! imagine no doctors..where would YOU be...dead of disease, a coke head with an MI. get real.doc's are leving the profession after 10 plus years of training because they are tired of being held responsible for YOUR HABITS. take responsibility for your actions, dont blame the doc you sought to "fix you". shame on you

Klonopin is a highly addictive drug that must be monitored..but with proper care and help, it is medication that, yes, has it's side effects, taken with the help of a doctor can save, or better yet, give you back your life. I should know. I have been on it for many years, and without it, i'd be dead by now. While I am sorry for what Stevie went through, it is not fair to demonize one person for a pharmaceutical that does more good than harm.
