Chelsea Handler Admits Abortion at 16, Loathes '16 and Pregnant'

She may be raking in the laughs now, but Chelsea Handler's life wasn't always so comical. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Handler divulged that she had no choice but to get an abortion when she discovered she was pregnant at 16 years old.

"I had an abortion when I was 16. Because that's what I should have done," she said frankly. "Otherwise I would now have a 20-year-old kid. Anyway, those are the things that people shouldn't be dishonest about."

But Handler has no sympathy for today's youngsters who broadcast their teen pregnancies to the world.

"We're seeking out such grossness in human behavior and want such mindless entertainment ... '16 and Pregnant.' Getting rewarded for being pregnant when you're a teenager? Are you serious? I mean, that makes me want to kill somebody."

Another thing that gets Handler riled up? The way she is characterized in the media. Although she is aware that her honesty is exactly the reason why she is often pegged as a "raunchy" comedian, Handler doesn't care for the moniker.

"That's my least favorite word, raunchy," she said. "Men are more apt to use that word about women than women are. I think that's why my audience is so female-heavy. They cheer you on, whereas men are, like, you're not supposed to talk like that."

Like her humor or not, at least Handler is an equal opportunity satirist.

"I try to make fun of everyone as often as possible, especially minorities," she said. "I'm a Jewish woman, so ..."

Well said...there was another choice...Chelsea chose herself first...and the life she and whoever created, gave that innocent baby no choice at all. Beyond sad...
I do agree with her and that stupid show.....disgusting...that is not entertainment...seems anything goes on tv! The dumbing down of America continues.

She did what she had too... It's not human until it can live outside the womb... and she didn't kill any human... She's not a murder... she is a human being that made a mistake

Dear God!
I am not sure whether I want kids yet, and I am 25. However, if I do end up being pregnant, I cannot envision killing the poor thing, many want kids but, can't have them, I would rather give up the baby for adoption to a family who really wants to love a baby and raise it, rather than destroy it. Does she know how heart breaking it is to those who want a child but cannot have any?

I also had an abortion, but I was 22 and it was due to a medical risk. It wasn't something I wanted to do and I felt uneducated and torn about it, as I am also Christian. It's been a very depressing journey.

I don't judge Chelsea. I love her and I'm still pro-choice, but I really advocate pregnancy counseling for women so they never have to be in that position. We are humans. We have sex. We make mistakes.

I agree about the 16 & Pregnant show. It's very entertaining, but these girls are getting filthy rich off of exploiting their teen pregnancies.

Chelsea is blunt and her words came out like a knife, but I get her point. I'm glad she admitted this, as about 40% of women WILL have had an abortion by the time they are 45. I know a few women who were raped and impregnated by family members and my heart goes out to them. I know very few women who actually look at abortion as a casual procedure and it was very difficult for most.

My hope is that more education is put out there, so there is less stigma and less need for women to feel abortion is their only choice. Those of you badmouthing her have obviously never been in a desperate situation. While I may not understand why she didn't continue her pregnancy, I was not in her shoes.

Only God can judge. Bottom line. No other woman is going to make me feel bad about my experience. I already feel bad enough about having to have gone through it and could care less about what a bunch of judgmental and ignorant women think. I'm not concerned at all.

You are a sick individual.... Kudos for killing your unwanted and inconvenient baby~~ People like you really make me sick. I would LOVE to see the reaction if she said..."Hey, when I was 16 I killed my puppy, I mean I really didn't want it and not sure why I got it anyway, so I just killed it." There would be OUTRAGE, but a baby, who cares! UGH, congrats for being an idiot.

Is she serious. Having an abortion is what she should have done ? Actually she should have kept her legs closed or used protection. THAT is mature. Do grown up things, pay grown up prices. COWARD.

I agree with this totally. If you want to do grown up things than you should be grown up enough to be responsible for your actions, not dispose of them. I was sixteen when I got pregnant and will be celebrating my daughters 20th birthday with her next week.

And just how do you know she didn't use potection? I over heard a very disturbing conversation the other day. Some men were talking about things they when they were younger. Some of them admitted to going into stores and popping holes in the condoms with needles, so it wouldn't be noticed. As adult men they were still laughing about it. Yeah, real funny. Wasn't them that had to worry about getting prenant, so they thought it was a big joke. No joke causing unwanted prenancies. Probbly some of the same azzholes judging teens that get abortions.
