Lauren Alaina Sings For Her Mother, Wins Over the Judges on 'American Idol' (Video)

It was a night of wall-to-wall music on a special Tuesday installment of 'American Idol'.

With but a single hour to pack in three rounds of competition between Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, there was hardly time to even get judges' comments, much less create emotional moments.

For the third round, though, Alaina managed to do just that with a perfectly suited song. Jimmy Iovine chose the song, which we're told will become her single if she wins the season. We have a feeling it might just get released even if she comes in second, though.

The song is 'Like My Mother Does,' and ironically was released first on seventh season finalist Kristy Lee Cook's album.

As the youngest contestant in the show who's had her mother by her side since day one, though, Alaina was able to connect with the lyrics and truly make it her own.

She even made her way out to the audience to embrace her mother during the performance, and by the time the comments were through, Jennifer Lopez had made a bold prediction that left both Lauren and her mother in tears.

"With that song you may have just won," Lopez said.

But was it enough to surpass McCreery's rabid fan-base? The judges gave a slight edge to Alaina on the night, but it is definitely anyone's game. Can she break the streak of male winners on 'American Idol'?

This was the soppiest bunch of wooie I've seen in a long time. They should have just shut down Scotty's phone lines and made it impossible to vote for him since they so obviously want this Carrie Underwood wanna be to win. Oh wait, Scotty's phone lines don't work. Surprise surprise...maybe we could call him Clay as a nickname??

I believe there is an interview on youtube. Reporter asked Haley Reinhart if she felt the judges were being to hard on her. Lauren Aliana interrupted the discussion by announcing that Haley had the best voice on the stage. Since Lauren has more vocal knowledge than I do , I'll take her word for it. I wouldn't think of disagreeing with the young girl so I didn't vote her. Thanks for the heads-up Lauren. If you don't think you're a winner who am I to disagree.

Two things missing from the finals -- James and Haley -- which would have been exciting. Instead we got served up boring slop. Scotty has real talent -- but he didn't show it tonight. And Lauren has absolutely no range which is why she blew out a vocal cord. I am quite sure the ratings will show it. Remember there were 95 million votes last week. There will be no where near that number this week.

I think it is rude to say who is gonna be the next american idol on last night show ....shame on jennifer lopez if you look at how scotty consistently preformed and his attitude throughout the season he is a geniune talented person, anyone can sing a sappy love song but his song he sang said it all!!! best wishes to scotty he doesnt need to play games to get votes!!!
