In the first 'Hangover' movie Zach Galifianakis' character Alan refers to Rainman as a 'retard,' and though the comment gets a big laugh, Hollywood heavyweights are stepping in to make sure this type of slur is no longer used.A PSA recently hit the airwaves featuring 'Glee' stars Jane Lynch and Lauren Potter discussing why racial and social slurs are hurtful.
The campaign, called the R-WORD, boasts the support of several industry leaders.
Check out the PSA, which uses uncensored minority slurs, and then head to www.r-word.org for more information.

Okay so everyone including kids can say the F word and the S word, and every other derogatory and inappopriate word, including dche bag, but you can't say retard?? When you call someone a retard, you are joking! Can't anyone take a joke anymore??? Obviously if you are a decent person you won't call a mentally disabled person a retard!

The whole point is to stop using the word as an adjective in reference to someone or something with a negative connotation. As in saying "that's retarted" or "you're so retarted". Of course you can't "ban" a word, but you can stop the way in which it is being used. It is a derogatory term anyway for those who happen to have downs syndrome so it should still even not be used in reference to those individuals. It was a term coined years ago when we didn't know any better.

Actually the word is a medical term. Look it up. It is still an appropriate term in that setting.
Some say that the word "retard" is just a word--but when you have a child you love more than anything diagnosed with a disability (in my little boy's case, severe autism) you will find this "word" extremely painful. I hope those who use it and those who don't think it's a big deal NEVER know what I go through each time someone uses that hateful word. This boy is the world to us & while I know intellectually that it is just a "WORD" it is still SO hurtful. IT'S ABOUT TIME to stop using it!!!

R word, give me a break. I'm black and I'm gay. Call me the N word or the F word, whatever, who cares! If you say it in fun, great, and guess what I probably have something more clever to throw back at you. If you say it out of hate, great, you've proven how ignorant you are. DON'T BAN WORDS. THEY'RE WORDS. Get a grip people!

Well, hello reason! I love you.
I like your attitude. Besides, banning words goes against the first amendment. How the hell are people gonna try to ban words; IT'S STUPID AND CHILDISH!!!!!! By the way, I'm straight, and not black.
I think that people are so disgusting on here and i agree as a parent of a child who has a disability its not just a word,And it IS the way that its used that does make it painful for people, I also Believe that the people who think that its only a word just show what is really wrong with society, and no you cannot ban a word but society can change the context of which they use it so jokingly, maybe someday it will affect your life and not be so funny.

You're probably a lot of fun at parties.
Actually Id rather party with my kids and help kids who are stuck at hospitals for various illnesses feel better and deal with the ignorance of unkind people than go to a your kind of party, all it takes is one person to change how kids view themselves obviously you are ignorant to the subject,Life is too short to only bring people down which is what most people are all about theese days,Parents that have actually had to watch thier child die and have countless surgeries feel difrently than you do apparently But im glad that you took the time out of your day to write that thanks!

I just want to respond again and in support of you Miranda. I agree with you 100%. I cannot beleive the ignorance of some of the people on here. I work at a school for kids with special needs that range from autisim to downs syndrome. It is the most challenging but the most rewarding career I have ever had. These precious angels are amazing. Just as any child is. It makes me so sad to see how hateful people in this world can be. I find it strange that people want to defend their hatred, ignorance and bigotry be it for use the "R" word, the "N" word, or the "F(A**ot)" word. Why brag about WANTING to say those words? It just shows that we still have a long way to go in this world to make it a better place. Even with someting as simple as not putting someone down and keeping your opinions or derogatory terms to yourself. I guess the only reason why people have to spew these negative things is to make themselves feel better. Keep up your positive attitude Miranda! I am with you.
Thanks so much , in a perfect world there wouldnt be such negativity towards anyone/people, but this is how it is i just try to avocate for kids who cant for themselves, it really does sadden me to see that adults can act so immature, because unless you are in said persons shoes you have no right to use thoose words and the people who say its okay because they are black and gay are you kidding? there is no need for any of thoose words at all. i would rather people use intelligence, and use thier voices to help others not bring people lower
