Rihanna premiered the music video for her latest single 'Man Down' on BET Tuesday (May 31) and the pop star is already facing criticism and controversy for the video, in which she guns down a man to avenge a suggested sexual assault.
Rihanna, who was the victim of an infamous assault by then-boyfriend Chris Brown in 2009, communicated to her fans over several Twitter messages that the message of the video was female safety and awareness. However, representatives from the Parents Television Council and Industry Ears have reportedly petitioned to have BET and parent company Viacom stop airing the video.
Paul Porter, co-founder of Industry Ears, which campaigns against negative images in the media argued, "If Chris Brown shot a woman in his new video and BET premiered it, the world would stop. Rihanna should not get a pass." Porter described the video's violent scene as "a cold, calculated execution of murder in prime time."
Melissa Henson of the Parents Television Council said, "Instead of telling victims they should seek help, Rihanna released a music video that gives retaliation in the form of premeditated murder the imprimatur of acceptability."
She has made her money and fame by being a victim, now that ticket has run out. She had to find some way to revive controversy since she has no actual talent to sell. Later she will play the race card and probably the I was abused as a child card.
You Can Put A Red Wig And Green Contacts On A Baboon And Its Still A Baboon. She is a talentless ghetto ho , thats why she has to parade around on stage and in her videos half naked like a baboon in heat.
Wow, that's interesting...I've heard their music, and yes it is definitely edgy, but have not seen any of their videos (which song are you talking about? I'd love to see...). There would be quite the debate if that were brought up by Rihanna's people...
Wait, wait. Ben Affleck's movie The Town inspired 2 morons in Chicago to go rob a bank. Rihanna has yet to cause any murders. And that's not even half as bad as the stuff shown on T.V. It's 4 minute music video. Let. It. Go.
I've heard "Shot A Man Down" before on the radio, and it sounds as if Rihanna could've chosen to do a regge version of The Little Drummer Boy for her first Christmas CD, if she wanted to make one. "Rum-pa-pa-pum, Rum-pa-pa-pum, rum-pa-pa-pum." is repeated 10 times. I agree that it's not one of her better songs, but once music channels like BET & VH1 Soul get hold of any music video, banned from the airwaves or not, they'll usually end up playing them, anyway, only because that's their choice. VH1 Soul even airs Erika Badu's "Window" video, and Beyonce's "Why Don't You Love Me?", in spite of their content, so how far can they draw the line before it's off the paper? That's the question.
It's about time people speak up to shut up Rihanna! She just seems to think she can sing anything, dress any way and DO anything (whether in real life or videos!)she wants and it degrading, inhumane, and downright criminal! I saw the horrible video (and her previous 2 disgusting ones) and it's just outrageous that she thinks it's cool to portray a woman shooting a man in cold blood and then dancing around 'in her evil way' for another 3 minutes singing about how she did it. Chris Brown was corrupted by her. He would have never acted in the abusive way he did had he not been 'possessed' by her demons! Go back to Barbados Rihanna and do your voodoo worship and dance there! We don't want it or your evil ways!
your nuts. that is all. your clearly nuts. i'm not a fan of rihannas my any means but she did no make chris brown her he could have just yelled instead he hit her. i wonder how you would feel if your spouse/significant other hit you.
It's just a music video!! She's not advising anyone who has been raped to track down the rapist and kill them. This is just telling a story. I hate when people take everything too seriously.
I like the song because it's different....it's a story....I love reggae and if you don't usually listen to alot of it, you won't understand. They tell stories and make sense. I get what she is trying to say....to me there's not a big deal here....it's music and who isn't a critic!
I agree Yasmine, She is the victom of ABUSE! I was raped by a family member when I was younger and all I ever wished is that he was dead! I was a victom of a situation that I had no controll of!!! This video depicts how a person feels and thinks after this ultimate evil thing has been done to them! It was the most painfull and frightening event that has ever happened to me!!! Abuse can be physical, mental,or emotional. You can move on but, It changes your life forever........you never forget! ps-skrew u vkirschman, your a loser!

That's just plain mean, she does have some talent however sexual and strange it may seem at times.

Stuart, you do realize she's from the Caribbean...Barbados to be exact, right? Far from "ghetto".
You know, there's already such a video from tAtU and I don't see anyone bugging them about it!

Rihanna is obsessed with sex. She is a horrible role model for her young audience. She should just be a stripper or porn actress already.
