Tabloid Apologizes for Hacking Into Sienna Miller's Cell Phone

After British newspaper, News of the World, hacked into Sienna Miller's cell phone to intercept voicemail messages intended for the actress' ears only, the publication is issuing an apology, according to the UK's Guardian. This is the first mia culpa from the paper which has also been charged with the phone hacking of other celebrities and public figures like actor Steve Coogan, TV and radio broadcaster, Chris Tarrant, British culture secretary, Tessa Jowell and even Miller's interior designer stepmother, Kelly Hoppen.

Although the publication initially claimed that the more than 24 victims' cell phones were hacked at the hand of a single reporter who had crossed the line, the Rupert Murdock owned tabloid is now taking full responsibility for the extreme breaches of privacy.

"Past behaviour at the News of the World in relation to voicemail interception is a matter of genuine regret," the apology stated. "It is now apparent that our previous inquiries failed to uncover important evidence and we acknowledge our actions then were not sufficiently robust."

The apology is just the cherry on top for Miller -- she is expected to receive £100,000 in damages. But the investigation into just how widespread knowledge of the hackings were at the news outlet is still underway. Investigators will comb through high level employee emails to see just how extensive the hacking operation was, and no doubt more hacking victims will come forward now that the generous payday standard has been set for those that can prove they were hacked.
