'Idol' Runner-Up Lauren Alaina Breaks Records With Debut Single

Lauren Alaina may not have finished first, but the recent 'American Idol' runner-up is quickly establishing herself as a formidable contender on the music charts. Her debut single, 'Like My Mother Does,' entered Billboard's all-genre Hot 100 chart at No. 20, in addition to No. 9 on the trade's Digital Songs chart, with an 121,204 single downloads sold.

This impressive feat marks the highest debut for a second place finalist in six years. "This is so awesome!" Lauren exclaims. "'American Idol' has changed my life, so I'm excited that the songs I performed on there are doing so well. I can't believe that I have a song out on country radio, much less that so many stations started playing it right away. I can't wait to get out and meet everybody and thank them personally for playing my song."

And that song is one that hits close to home for Lauren. "Not only is 'Like My Mother Does' important to me professionally, but it's also special to me personally because my mom has been beside me through this whole thing," she tells. "She has been my biggest cheerleader and my biggest supporter when I was feeling down. This song is for her."

The Georgia native has a busy summer ahead. Aside from recording her debut album in Nashville, the singer will attend the CMA Music Festival, present an award at the CMT Music Awards and make her Grand Ole Opry debut June 10.

I just love Alaina!!! What a change to have a beautiful, wholesome, humble young girl on the music charts. I live in Garner, NC, which is the hometown of Scotty McCreery and I can't think of two better people more deserving of a successful music career than these two. I wish them both all the success in the world. Could it be that by voting for Alaina and Scotty America is telling us that they're ready for some entertainers with morals and values? 121k in sales after 2 weeks does not bode well for her. It may be one of those minor records for an Idol contestant, but I don't see her having a career long term...especially if she keeps straining her voice. In a couple of years, she'll be in the oblivion pool of Idol also-rans.

Scotty has outsold her by a mile...go check out the records HE SET on the music charts last week....not some made up Idol record. She will fade away and he will have a nice career. She is a dime a dozen in Nashville, and she wears clothes that look like a 40 year old buys a Chicos. The song is recycled from two failed CD's already...Kristy Lee Cook recorded it, then a gal named Jesse Lee recorded it. Lauren gets the left overs all the way around...and from the looks of it, she's been eating a lot of them too!

So many times the second, third and even fourth place contestants do better than the winner of American Idol. And they are not locked into Idol's recording contract that lasts longer and seems to be tough to break or wait for it to expire.
