This weekend, the Broadway world gets ready for the Tony Awards, hosted tonight by Neil Patrick Harris, who will also perform a song with the cast (including Jon Cryer and Stephen Colbert) of the recent concert production 'Company.'
Meanwhile, the TV world is getting ready to bring all the backstage drama of the NYC theater industry onto the small screen with an upcoming series called 'Smash.'
The new NBC show, from executive producer Steven Spielberg, stars 'American Idol' runner-up Katharine McPhee as an underdog actress seeking musical-theater stardom, and 'Will & Grace' Emmy winner Debra Messing as the creator of a new production about Marilyn Monroe. In the pilot, Oscar winner Anjelica Huston pops up in a supporting role.
With ample musical numbers and themes of ambition, it's clear the recipe for success that worked for 'Glee' is influencing Messing's new series. But will the fact that 'Smash' focuses on adults (not high schoolers) be a boon, or a bore? Although millions love the the over-the-top song and dance antics of MicKinley High's teen divas, NBC's new venture will challenge viewers to come along for a more grown-up ride, much of it set to music. Check out this preview:
'Smash' will premiere sometime midseason on NBC's Monday primetime schedule, according to EW.com, and will feature both original songs and covers, from the classic 'Somwhere Over the Rainbow' to Christina Aguilera's 'Beautiful.'
McPhee, 27, looks and sounds smashing in the preview clip. And she has another reason to smile: In addition to singing on the series soundtrack, which is already in the works at Columbia Records, she just landed a new solo record deal. The vocalist has already released three albums since her 'Idol' season ended, including a Christmas album that performed poorly on the charts, selling less than 25,000 copies after its October 2010 release. Still, McPhee's loyal fans certainly hope the new show pans out to be exactly what it advertises: a smash.
Jon Hamm, star of the hit series "Mad Men", is spotted filming scenes for the upcoming season. Jon was all smiles while filming in a red, vintage Imperial convertible.
okay you three who e-mailed me and are obviously fans of KM. As I have met her and was not impressed by her dismissive attitude to an 11year old who asked her for an autograph and she looked at my friends daughter give an annoying sigh (and this was right after she came into meet the fans)so it was not as if she had been bombarded by lots of fans. Said to my friends daughter oh in a minute and walked right past her. The other Idols where all VERY VERY courteous and friendly as have ALL the Idols we have met in the years since then. Only KM was rude. Sorry the truth is the truth. Too bad you don't like it but it is what it is. I do wish her well as I wish everyone well. As for lying sorry I do not lie and quite frankly I hate people who do. I will not respond anymore to this so take it for what it is. I hope theri show is a success for the sake of the other cast members and crew. That may sound hypocrtical but I do wish them all well just too bad SHE is on the show.
Regurgitate, recycle and repeat the same lame actresses after a "hit" show NEVER works, in this case i hope DeBORE is playing Cahterines grandmother, reality bites
Kat does alot of volunteer work for children. She loves working, and giving her time to children. I wish her, and the cast of "Smash" good luck. I'll be watching show.
Great cast. Katharine looks and sounds beautiful. I really liked her on American Idol, and I love her in the clips of this show so far. Can't wait to watch it!
What a silly mommy! Katie Holmes takes Suri into the water in her clothes as the two spend the afternoon at the beach in Miami. More of Today's Hottest Photos
