A perennial 'American Idol' contestant who infamously gave the show the double bird after being eliminated on her birthday this year was arrested in Maine over the weekend following a domestic dispute. Jessica Candage, who competed under her maiden name of Cunningham, was picked up by Portland police after they spotted the singer using her husband as a punching bag following the Old Port Festival, the Portland Press Herald reports.
Officer Chris Hawley approached the couple on the street and observed small cuts on his face from the alleged assault. She was taken to Cumberland County Jail and released on unsecured bail of $1,000.
Candage, 25, is expected to go before a judge this month to face domestic violence charges, but her husband Craig tells the Press Herald that he's at fault and if anything, she should be commended for stopping him from driving after a day of fun.
"We were out with friends. We had just gotten into an argument over something and I said, 'I'm taking off,' " Craig Candage said. "I never had any intention of doing it (driving). It was more threatening on my end. She obviously didn't take it well for me to be doing that. It's not in her personality."
He added, "In my opinion, it shows she cares more than anything, rather than letting me do it. I could have hurt other people."
Candage said he asked the police to not press charges, but they had no choice.
"If (the police) had known the situation, they should have taken me away for stupidity instead of her away for what she did," Craig Candage said.
She is due back in court on June 30.
As Jessica Cunningham, the singer has auditioned for 'American Idol' seven times, making the top 24 the past two seasons. Earlier this year she pleaded with the judges to send her to higher rounds because it was her birthday. But Jennifer Lopez sent her packing.
"They've ruined my birthday," she complained. "You know what I have to say to that? [Jessica throw up a two-handed lewd gesture] You guys know you deserve it. You can't see what it is. You probably got 'American Idol' bubbles around these fingers right now, but you ruined my birthday. I love ya, but c'mon!"
she should of made it on idol...there are allot of good singers that were not chosen.....idol wants diversity and all they ended up with were...screeching ,scratchy,straining voices....none of the finalist raised the roof like other idol shows....they were boring......

This is the most interesting thing I've seen about American Idol yet. Flipping them the double bird! Five out of the last 6 "Idols" were white males. Haley Reinhart was a MUCH better singer than Scotty. The show is not about musical talent. I could tell 3 or 4 shows out that Scotty was going to win. Either they had made up their minds already, or it's fixed. Haley did some amazing songs and JLo and Randy's attitude was "Yeah, you're great, but you're not going to win."
all haley did was screech and strain..she wasn't natural at all because she strained her voice...I didn't like it at all...for every one of you there are 10 that agree with me.....this was the worst final in idol....none of them made me say "wow"..
