Penn Badgley has nabbed a part almost every young guy in Hollywood was hoping to land. The 'Gossip Girl' star will portray the late singer Jeff Buckley in an upcoming biopic, Deadline reports.
The film, titled 'Greetings from Tim Buckley,' tells the true story of how Buckley tries to understand why his father, Tim, abandoned him. The story takes place during the days leading up to his 1991 tribute concert for his father, which essentially launched his music career before his tragic death in 1997.
"To play a man who was singularly gifted as an artist, greatly misunderstood and mythologized as a human being... It's something very special and sacred. I'm going to give all I can to this project," Badgley said about his new role.
Patrick Milling Smith from Smuggler Films, the production company behind the project, said the search for the right actor play the talented singer wasn't an easy one.
"In its purest form this is a father and son story, a rite of passage that is made possible by a romantic journey Jeff finds himself on. We see Jeff accepting who he is to become and laying to rest the ghost of his father while ultimately finding his voice," he said. "We had been searching well over a year for an actor that can come close to Jeff's spirit while also having the serious musical chops required to authentically tell this story. Penn's audition blew us away and we knew we found our star."
However, according to Deadline, this film isn't the only Jeff Buckley biopic heading into production soon. Director Jake Scott has teamed up with Buckley's mother, Mary Guibert, for what they call the "official" Jeff Buckley biopic. That film, which anticipates a fall start date, reportedly has the rights to Buckley's songs.
Do you think Penn Badgley has what it takes to portray Jeff Buckley?
Penn Badgely is a great actor, and I know he will do a great job, but HELLO!! Does anyone else think that James Franco would've been the ideal choice? They look so much alike it's scary, and if you have seen his portrayal of James Dean, you KNOW how good he is at playing the deep, angsty, troubled type. I will definitely see the movie and like it. Just thought I'd give my opinion.
Just crawled out from under my rock. Who was Jeff Buckley? Why does anyone think that a movie about him will sell? Dang, a movie about Freddie Mercury wouldn't even sell, but it would certainly showcase a more talented singer. If there are any other Producers out there with money to waste, please contact me.

Jeff wasn't angsty or troubled.

He died in his prime and his music still haunts his fans today. It should be a great movie to remember him by.
With Penn its definetly a straight to video tv movie at best. James franco? Ian Sommerhalder? Jared Leto? Whoever cast this movie should be FIRED
