Former 'The Hills' star Lauren Conrad and longtime beau Kyle Howard have broken up, PEOPLE confirmed Friday. The couple dated for three years.

Though her previous relationships played out in front of the camera (remember 'Laguna Beach'?) Conrad was diligent in keeping Howard out of the spotlight. "By the time I had met Kyle, I had already perfected my 'double life,'" she said to Seventeen last year. "There was my TV life and my real life."

Earlier this year, rumors began flying that the 'My Boys' actor had proposed to the 25-year-old reality TV star. "This is totally false," her rep told UsMagazine.com at the time.

Things seemed to be going well in February when Conrad told PEOPLE on Valentine's Day that Howard, 33, is "very sweet." She continued gushing, saying: "I don't think you need a specific day to celebrate your love for someone. I think it can be a Tuesday. It's an everyday thing."

No cause for the breakup has been revealed.
