Charlize Theron once declared she wouldn't marry until gay marriage was legalized in the U.S., but now she says she's swearing off marriage altogether.
In a new interview on CNN's 'Piers Morgan Tonight,' the Oscar-winning actress discussed her stance on gay marriage and revealed that she doesn't see marriage in her future.
"I'll be the first to say, here on your show, marriage -- before I felt this way about [marriage equality] -- was never something that was important to me. I don't know the exact reason for that," Theron said.
"Some would say because I came from a very troubled marriage," she said. "My parents did not have a good marriage, but I don't think it's that."
Calling the ability to get hitched a "divine right," Theron talks about the government's role in deciding who people can and can't love.
"When government starts to tell us who can love and what is good love, whether government or a government built on a certain religion, I do have a problem with that," she said. "If you want to bring it back to the politics...I do have a problem with the fact that our government hasn't stepped up enough to make this federal, to make [gay marriage] legal."
Theron, who split from longtime boyfriend Stuart Townsend in January, says she'll be happy just having a meaningful relationship with someone.
"I really want for myself a long-term relationship, and I have been in long-term relationships...That's the kind of union that I want," she said. "The actual ceremony is not something that is important to me -- but I see the importance for other people."
In 2009, Theron appeared on 'The View' to discuss her views on gay marriage.
"I don't want to get married because right now the institution of marriage feels very one-sided, and I want to live in a country where we all have equal rights," Theron said at the time, adding, "I have so many friends who are gays and lesbians who would so badly want to get married, that I wouldn't be able to sleep with myself."
The point should be that she made a promise--however misguided--and ought to stick with it. Gay marriage--even if it's not called that--will soon be legal in most states, so the beautiful and talented Charlize should show us her honesty!
I will admit Charlize is an excellent actress. I like her as an actress, but, her true persona, leaves alot to be desired. She is very self-absorbed. She stated in the article above. the Government dictates who you can or cannot love. You can love anyone. Marriage is another thing. Personally, i can't go aong with gay marriage. I don't agree with it and never will. It's my opinion and I'm entitled to it. Charlize needs to keep her views to herself (as many actors these days should) and whether she will ever marry or not, who cares? Aren't there more important things going on in our world these days? Please.
Like you, Charlize and any other actor has a right to their own opinion. You expressed your opinion, didn't you? Why shouldn't she be able to express hers. Why?...because it differs from yours? Do you even realize what you just wrote? Read it! It makes absolutely no sense.
marriage for gay people is a different dimension, than that of hetero people. Some accept gays, like Theron, some hate them, I accept them by the way. Let people live their lives, let them decide on their own what and when to do whatever they like to do. I don't ask my mom when should I make love to my boyfriend, or when I should go to the toilet or when I should have kids, or when I should have a beer or instead a cup of cocoa. Our lives are dictated every once in a while by peer pressure. If you know that, you know the whole deal. So leave the girl alone, for goodness sake. She's mature enough!
Then she will grow old alone. How sad that this culture has so denigrated marriage between a man and a woman. Hollywood pop culture thinking is destroying society. These people are not and should not be role models for anyone.
Hollywood seems to be anti-marriage these days. Just look at Benicio del Toro his quote "why do I have to get married so I can get divorced" and now the idiot is having a baby from a casual fling - I bet he's eating his own words!
Too many people on here are down on marriage because theirs didn't work out. I got married when I was 19. My wife was 19 as well. We made it work, and will be married 24 yrs next month. What is our secret? We treat each other with respect most of the time. When we don't we apologize. We got married having the same values about life/children/religion etc. That helped us out a lot. Don't get down on marriage my friends. Marriage is the cornerstone of civilization. I also disagree with the 50% of all marriages divorce stat. I've been married once. A few of my friends have been married 2-3 times. Their many marriages hurts the stat.
I couldn't agree more with you. The marriage bashers are usually the ones whose marriage didn't work out or whose parents were divorced. Yes marriage isn't for everyone but like yours it can work if you work at it!

She's just saying that because someone hurt her real bad. Gay marriage is a joke. God doesn't recognize gay marriage. That is a man made thing. She is probably a loon, and no one wants to marry her. Get out of "Hollyweird", to find a good man.
I can understand her, one should not be pushed into marriage, my mom always said. I think it's a persons right to decide this. What does it change, if she does not marry. Nothing.
What a silly mommy! Katie Holmes takes Suri into the water in her clothes as the two spend the afternoon at the beach in Miami. More of Today's Hottest Photos

Should have said that in the first place instead of tying it in with gay marriage.
