'American Idol' revolutionized the singing competition in America ten years ago, and its first winner, Kelly Clarkson, went on to worldwide success and fame. This summer, 'The Voice' has arguably reinvented the concept by putting the focus on ... the voice. Will its winner go on to comparable success?
With top caliber coaches in Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera, the show was more about nurturing tomorrow's superstars than sitting distant and aloof in judgment of them. And after all was said and done it came down to 2%.
On this first season finale, Carson Daly announced that the top two contestants in votes were separated by that slimmest of margins. But who would it be? Dia Frampton, who wowed us each week with her unique takes on contemporary classics? Beverly McClellan, The classic rocker with a vibe all her own? Javier Colon, the smooth crooner with a voice like silk? Or Vicci Martinez, the diminutive powerhouse who's voice is as boundless as her energy?
!!SPOILER ALERT!!
The finale featured the contestants performing duets with some of their idols, which gave us the unexpected treat of hearing Colon take the stage with Stevie Nicks on 'Landslide.' Martinez and Train's Patrick Monahan tackled 'Drops of Jupiter,' which sounded great, but the two of them lacked any chemistry on stage.
Far less impressive was Dia Frampton and Miranda Lambert tackling 'The House That Built Me.' It just seemed that neither of them sounded great on the song, and they didn't mesh well together.
But even that was better than Beverly McClellan joining One Republic's Ryan Tedder on 'Good Life.' It almost looked like not only did she not know the song, but it didn't seem like it was even her choice. Maybe her true musical hero was unavailable.
But all that was for fun, and what really mattered was finding out who will wear the title of 'The Voice.' Daly narrowed it down to the top two, which synched up nicely with the top two slots in the iTunes charts: Dia Frampton and Javier Colon.
But while Frampton was on top of the iTunes chart, it was Javier Colon who pulled off the victory, becoming the first ever champion of 'The Voice.' We suspect, however, that both he and Frampton will be making records very soon, if not several of the finalists.
happy for javier. look forward to seeing what kind of album he will release. has a great voice, when he doesn't overdo it.
so glad dia didn't win. she's such a snoozefest. way too shy. i mean, she would get asked questions on the show by blake or carson and she'd give quiet one word answers. i'm like really? do you have anything that resembles a personality? plus she sang every song the same way, with the same range and inflections... again, no personality even in her "singing". no wonder she got dropped from her record label, they were probably sick of her one note sound too.
The show surprised me by keeping my interest going, even when I didn't like some of the singers or their styles. Javier Colon was one of the singers I hoped to see as winner. Some fine singers/performers didn't make the cut, and I hope they attracted enough interest from their coaches that they, too, will end up with albums in the near future.
Once again a reality show dissapoints! really "the Voice" an undiscovered talent that has already has more than his fair share of chances wins! really??? great dissapointment!
The right person definitely won. I was disappointed in the show because of its lenient rules on the show. Letting someone on the show who has had albums out, music videos on MTV and some-what of a successful music career seems unfair to participants and people who auditioned for the show. All I can say is, Mia at least you got your face on TV. That should boost sales for Meg & Dia. Am I right or what ?
No you are not right. You do know the person you said was the right person to win, just like Dia, also had a major label record contract. And unlike Dia, Javier actually had a song in the top 100. All of the finalist, and seven of the final eight, had released albums. I do not see how you can hate on Dia but then praise Javier who had as much exposure before going on the show.
Seriously, had no one with records out had not been allowed on the show the finals may have been Xenia, Lily, Curtis and Devon.
Dia should have won and the iTunes charts show that out because she is currently number one and has been since yesterday morning. And there inlies The Voice's credibilty problem, how someone can dominate the iTunes charts the last four months and still loses is a serious problem.
"Once again a reality show disappoints", agree 100% Dia had no power in her voice, Beverly McClellan she can sing but she needed to leave all of that bluesy stuff out on some of the songs ( i guess she wanted to copy her coach).
And it appears Christina didn't get her way. What an attention getter she wanted to be. Nice boobs each night.
A Carson, what a stick figure of a host. The man is clueless.
The Voice was great, lets hope American Idol learns a lesson. First, they need to tell these judges to be more like Simon. This past year American Idol was the worst. As well, stop showing all the loosers and stick with the talent. All the Voice singers would have run right over any and all American Idols.
American Idol vs The Voice? The Voice hands down, I no longer watch AI since Season 7. The talent on that show from Season 8, was not the best and the judges don't judge they just promote there music. The Voice was all about the voice which it should be, and they actually worked with the contestants to help lance there careers unlike AI!
This was the worse talent show ever. The judges (mentors?) acted like they were deaf, the contestants were really untalented, and the performances were so awful, but everyone would hoop and hollar about how great they were....it was a consistent disappointment, my family really disliked this show, it's format, and the judges. We won't be tuning in again, ever.
