Friend: Jonathan Rhys Meyers Did Not Attempt Suicide

'Tudors' star Jonathan Rhys Meyers was rushed to a Central London hospital Tuesday night after reports that he had taken a large quantity of pills in an attempt at suicide, according to The Sun. Now, a friend of the actor is speaking out, saying that Meyers' dangerous condition was due to a relapse rather than a go at taking his own life.

"It was not a suicide attempt," a source close to the actor told Us Weekly. "He did relapse and was hospitalized for that, but was released."

Paramedics arrived at the troubled star's Maida Vale home Tuesday evening to find Meyers "slumped" on the floor. But upon their arrival, the actor refused medical attention, prompting paramedics to call the police.

"Officers were called by London Ambulance Service following reports of a man refusing treatment," Scotland Yard confirmed. "The man was taken to hospital."

Thirty minutes passed before police arrived and the 33-year-old was taken by ambulance to the hospital for immediate medical attention.

"This is very sad," a different source told The Sun following the incident. "It was the opinion of those present that he tried to take his life."

Meyers was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday morning and told The Sun, "No comment" when it came to his condition.

This is not the first substance abuse incident that has left Meyers in a more than precarious state. Meyers has been battling a drinking problem for years and in early June checked into a South African rehab facility -- his fifth go at rehabilitation.

This is such ashamed this young man is so talented and it's so sad that he can't find anything in his life worth living for...I will pray for him as I did for Robert Downey Jr. It's such ashamed to see these young people waste the talented lives they have been given

It would be nice if someone like Robert Downey Jr. would take him under his wing and be a mentor or sponsor. I think he'd really benefit from this. And yes, he is a VERY talented actor.

I totally agree with u. I am sad for his state of being and praying for his recovery. All we see is the glamorous life of these entertainers, but we all have a our demons to deal with. I hope he finds peace and love to carry him through. The only place I've ever gotten that type of solace was in Christ. Please believe me, I've felt very down and out in my life a time or two, so I know what I'm talking about. REAL TALK! God is Real!

The people who Pray for these people who have all the money and resourses in the world make me SICK. If you want to pray for somebody, pray for that homless alcoholic and drug addict that has no resources or loved ones.

ok for starters I love it when they have articles about suicide and attempts, just so I can see how stupid and uneducated our public is......Mental Illness is an illness....and sometimes Suicide is the end result!!!!! How selfish you are to not want them to deprive you of there talent. STIGMA....talk about the mental illness not your wish that he would deprive you. Every 15 min. someone dies by suicide and every 16 the loved ones are left to pick up the pieces!!!!!!!!

My beloved son took his own life after 2 yrs. of terrible pain that the surgeons told him there was nothing more they could do for him. Perhaps He had been so desperate that he tried it too. Like my son, who also did it with pills 3 times previous,maybe next time it will be with a gun when no one is around to stop him. Please get that man some psychiatric help for whatever is troubling him. Praying for him now.

I know he has been troubled in the past and I believe when he lost his Mother he fell off the wagon, drinking. I only hopw he sees what a unique, talented guy he is. No one could have played King Henry better than he in that series. I adore him and only hope he finds the faith and courage to stay here. It's horrible to feel so alone and battle demons. Prayers to him. May he find a little light & hope withing himself to see what we all see. A talented, beautiful young man!!

Sorry to hear about your son Jean. I too have a lot of pain after what was suppose to be a simple surgery. Now after 3 years inhospitals and rehabs I'm still in pain every day and there isn't a day I don't wish i was dead.

Meyers has a problem and it is a sad one. He lost his mother, fell off the wagon and for some reason is unable to handle the fame and fact he is so talented makes it even harder for him.
Hope he recovers and can get back on the straight and narrow as he is enjoyed by many.
